MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

Hyperdub Records, and the Latest Faceless Artist

Posted about 1 year ago

It seems like all the best electronica is in some way linked to England, or at least the Uk, but Burial's latest release is so popular in the US that I am beginning to think that a lot of new artists are going to appear from the states. Flying Lotus for example is by far my favorite new electronica artist, and even he is signed to a British label, but what is more important is how deeply engrained hip-hop culture is in his music. As opposed to Burial who apparently hasn't showed his face at any show, and has an opaque publicity like that of the gorillaz , but is still up for this years Mercury awards for Dubstep album of 2008.

People take Dubstep very seriously in the Uk, and although I personally believe that this album is very important in terms of defining what Dubstep is, there are many who will vehemently oppose this nomination. A lot can be done with any musical style given a certain list of guidelines, therefore allowing a more controlled artistic freedom within those boundaries, and Untrue is a prime example of an album that serves to solidify the style rather than expreiment with it. The Dub style is very soft, and heavily reliant on rever, and catchy Soul samples in this album. Overall worth purchasing, as well as his first self-titled album which is a bit more upbeat. If you like this though, and have read to here, you should also take a listen to 1983 byt FlyLo.

I've been loving Untrue for quite a while now, glad it's been nominated.
