Flying Lotus - Los Angeles and Stones Throw

Although upon my first listen, I really couldn't get with Flying Lotus' abstract beats, and slight off rhythm drum sequences, once I realized how much he admires the label Stones Throw and all the hip-hop artists who have dominated through them, I recognized how he's really reminiscent of J Dilla and Madlib as well. What I love about this album most is that it's his first record release through Warp, which I feel is very fitting considering his obvious dance influence. With artists like this I always wonder what sort of program they use, or especially whether or not they incorporate vinyl into their songs. From the looks of it, he really puts on a hell of a show considering he's one of the few brilliant Warp artists located in the states. As a Californian, I think he's a very good representation for American musicians who would rather incorporate themselves with European labels, and in emulating the style of LA's Stones Throw cats, he is spreading the awareness of J Dilla who passed before he could really be appreciated fully. As long as England still has things like the Bang Face festival, I feel like we need some sort of artist or something that can put on dope little raves especially if there if obvious Hip-Hop facets. It may seem unfair to correlate the two considering how Jay Dee was in fact a Disc Jockey in the conventional sense, and Flying Lotus most likely programs a majority of his parts. However, the mere fact that Flying Lotus has art of Dilla on his myspace leads me to believe that he truly loved his music and was therefore intentionally influenced.

Huh, I think Dilla was a producer primarily as well. Nevertheless, great track and post. Lotus is definitely doing some Dilla stuff - just lieten to Donuts and you will know. I need to get this LP BTW - I listened to the Reset EP a lot over the Spring.
