Few documentaries will wow and disturb you like Jason Kohns 'Manda Bala', A look at corruption and kidnapping in São Paulo Brazil. Even if you have a stomach for violence, there's a good chance you will cringe at least at one point. While the subject matter is pretty heavy at times, (It makes the ear cutting scene in Reservoir Dogs look like child's play in comparison) the entire film is backed by 70's Brazilian pop, giving it a lighter feel. The Soundtrack elevates the entire film to the point where, had any other style of music been used, it most likely wouldn't have been as overall effective. The soundtrack is worth checking out alone. However, if you have the chance to see Manda Bala, theres a good chance these images of a sun soaked, crime drenched Brazil will always be linked to them.
