I'll admit that I have a history with Broken Social Scene that may be deeper than most people's. Finding them shortly after You Forgot It In People came out, the album essentially became the soundtrack to that part of my life. Ultimately listening to it will bring me back to those times for better or worse. Regardless, I was an avid fan from the get go and along the way became an avid fan of their collective (essentially everybody's side project)As I watched the band grow from local to international sensation, something became evident, they were falling apart. Other members such as Jason Collett, Amy Milan, Emily Haines and Leslie Feist all took off and became recognized in their own right. However, because of this ultimately Broken social scene as a whole suffered. Now I'm not saying they took a nose dive and completely crashed and burned, because together theres a lot of talent between them. However, between the release of You Forgot it in People and their self titled follow up, they had essentially bought into their own hype hook line and sinker. Kevin Drew's trade mark saying on tour was “Enjoy your lives” when at the same time he was was breaking down.Drew has acknowledged this a few times when being interviewed for his recent solo album, and a lot of what ended up surfacing on Spirit If I believe was written during that time period. This version of Broke Me Up comes from October 04, which was still a year before their self tittled. I'm not sure how long Kevin had been working on it by this point, but you can tell he was in rough shape emotionally as it sounds nothing like the version that ended up on his album.
