This is Broken Social Scene, kicking ass and taking names while headlining at Guelph's hillside fest in '03

Even though Hillside had been around for 20 or so years at this point, this was the year that turned it from a well known festival, to a world renowned festival.

There is no doubt that Broken Social Scene played a big role in that turning point. That night they played their hearts out, playing a mix of songs off of 'You Forgot It In People' as well as songs that wouldn't find themselves on disc for another 2 years. Simply put, the energy was palpable.

The following year, Hillside would sell out in a fraction of the time it took to sell out in 2003.

I challenge anyone to find a better live version of this song.

Few documentaries will wow and disturb you like Jason Kohns 'Manda Bala', A look at corruption and kidnapping in São Paulo Brazil. Even if you have a stomach for violence, there's a good chance you will cringe at least at one point.

While the subject matter is pretty heavy at times, (It makes the ear cutting scene in Reservoir Dogs look like child's play in comparison) the entire film is backed by 70's Brazilian pop, giving it a lighter feel.

The Soundtrack elevates the entire film to the point where, had any other style of music been used, it most likely wouldn't have been as overall effective.

The soundtrack is worth checking out alone. However, if you have the chance to see Manda Bala, theres a good chance these images of a sun soaked, crime drenched Brazil will always be linked to them.

Sadly Tyrone Ashley was 15 minutes too late to become famous. He was in with the parliament/funkadelic crew before they hit it big, but unfortunately never got off the ground himself. All that really ever materialized was a 45 he released back 60's. Thankfully Truth and soul records have released a compilation of his unearthed work. A high recommendation, should you enjoy funk/soul.
