What Gives You The Tingles?

Posted over 2 years ago
What to post as my first Mog? How about a question? I know you can answer this because if you didn't have these feelings you wouldn't be on MOG anyway. What little part of a song just gives you goosebumps when you hear it? Every time? Is it the opening bars of a band's iconic song, say the deep flange of "How Soon is Now" by The Smiths? Maybe it's sheer power pushed through the speakers, like the brutal crunch of Rage's "Guerrilla Radio." Or something so small you can barely feel it, like the guitar break in "Girls on Film" by Duran Duran? Does the perfect word give you chills, say something from Dylan, or Mann, or Partridge or Yorke?I tagged Eleni Mandell because I've felt that funny feeling again. When the background "mmmmm"s creep in on "Moonglow, Lamp Low" they sound like she recorded them on vinyl, then played the record into her soundboard to get that distant, scratchy feel. Like an old country 45 calling out from 1957, or a lost sample of Patsy Cline recently uncovered. Goosebumps. What's yours?

  1. Jess Horrible says hey, welcome to mog, and a great first post. as for your goosebumps question... there are many, many songs that do this to me on a regular basis. I think instantly of Bjork's 'Cocoon'... but I know there are more.

  2. deadmandeadman says Hey, let me add my welcome. And yes, a great post. I have never much cared for the Beatle's Ob La De Ob la Da (or whatever). But the horn charts during the final two choruses get me so high. Howard Johnson's Tuba in the Band's RAG MAMA RAG., (live from the Rock of Ages cd) Bernie Worrel's Carnival organ in Groovalegiance (Funkadelic) Oh i could go on an' on. But yeah, those moments exist, i'll bet, for all of us.

  3. SatisfiedMind614 says Wow....man get out of my head! That opening Smith's reverb is exactly what gives me that tingly feeling...and the Stone Roses opening guitar lick on 'Love Spreads' has the same affect on me welcome!

  5. Dale says (EMCD alert, y'all!) The first bit of falsetto from "The Zookeeper's Boy" by Mew makes me get a catch in my throat, every time. The drum machine break at the beginning of New Order's "Blue Monday" makes me sit up and take notice. I could give answers to this question all night.

The opening notes of Bra by Cymande (as sampled by De La Soul) The intro to Family Affair-Sly and The Family Stone The drum intro to God Make Me Funky-The Headhunters When James Brown sez "1,2,3,4 git it", before the drum break in Funky Drummer The intro to Song for My Father-Horace Silver and many, many more I know and hope to know.

  9. missjunk says Hello, great question. Thanks for this post. An old band called SQUEEZE- has this cute song "cool for cats" the guy has this fantastic english accent that makes me weak in the knees. When he starts singing: A give a little muscle I'll spend a little cash But all I get is bitter And a nasty little rash It's the way he says little.... it's like leeh- tell also: When the Specials do "Rudy"- those horns knock me over.... By the way, Welcome

  11. ChiaraSera says way to enter mog with bang! this is a great post! I would have to go with Falling out of Love at This Volume by Bright Eyes. It's th only one of his songs I ever truly loved. It's like he read my mind and then put it to music. I love the song you have in this post too. at the risk of sounding a musical ignorami, who is she?

  16. chucky says Wow - you started with a bang didn't you? Most excellent. :) Every moment of "the great gig in the sky" touches me deeply. The opening music of "painted window" by authority zero brings my entire body and soul to life. Every time it starts, I feel like I was sleep walking before it started. "Sister" by the nixons, the line "you're all I hoped you'd become" - makes me tear up every *single* time I hear it. ...I could do this all day, that's enough for now. Welcome to mog! I definitely hope to see more of you.

  17. joemeyer says Last time I got the goosebumps, or the tingle up and down my spine was when I first heard "Ode To The Sun" by dredg, when they opened up for the Deftones at the Starland Ballroom. I sometimes still do when I hear that song, or hear them perform it live.

  18. ponchoandy says I'm such a sap, I have a million of these moments...and they often progress from goosebumps to full-blown tearing up...yes, good music makes me teary-eyed even when it's not sad. I don't get it either: -the chant at the end of Peter Gabriel's "Biko" -the Dresden Dolls' "Sex Changes"...I'm a sucker for bands that can sound that ferocious with just two instruments -pretty much anything Tracey Thorn sings...but Massive Attack's "Protection" tends to reduce me to a blubbering idiot everytime -I used to have a version of "Clare de Lune" played on a harp...wish I knew what I ever did with it -the drum intro and opening chord of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" Okay, enough. Thanks for a fun opening post!

  19. adam judy says welcome. my spine tingling moments include - the bit in 'let down' by radiohead where the overlapping vocals kick in during the middle eight. the bit in 'save the children' by marvin gaye where the ''singing'' kicks in. the opening choir bits to wake up by the arcade fire. the whole of 'we ruled the school' by belle and sebastian. oh and the key change in tunnels by the arcade fire, the most underated and subtle of the arcade fire key changes, but emotionally the most powerful.

  20. adam judy says oh im forgetting, the bit in my body is a cage by the arcade fire, where it peaks. bloody amazing.

  22. Viva La Britt says Way to make an entrance, Origami- welcome aboard. Hmm, the bridge on Queen of the Stone Age's "You Can't Quit Me, Baby" right before Josh Homme sings "You're solid gold, I'll see you in hell"- gets me every time. The run Jeff Buckley does around the 4:35 mark in his cover of "Calling You". Trent Reznor's "And I want you"s and the accompanying background _ooohs_ of "The Perfect Drug".

  23. tomiiko says Excellent Question! 1.) The line "She's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever" from Jeff Buckley's 'Lover you Should've Come Over" 2.)Another line "How could you treat my heart so mean and cruel" from Marvin Gaye's "Distant Lover" 3.) "Can we go to a movie and cry together" from If I was your Girlfriend by U Know Who It's the crooners, begging in a plaintive tone for relief and bemoaning unrequited love that gets to me. makes my tummy feel funny.

  27. Jonh Ingham says You blindsided me with Eleni Mandell. When those 'mmmm's come in it made the hairs of my neck stand up. I've never heard of her but by the end of the song she's my new favourite artist - spectacular. Chill moments: At the end of the intro to 'God Only Knows' when the vocals repeat the French horn line from a few bars earlier. Later, the vocal break in the middle 8, where they make a Sistine Chapel out of the same line. On Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall, in 'Do It Again', the point where she repeats the word 'again' over and over, going up a note each time, until she comes out in the next key. Amazingly sensuous.

  28. goodmusiconly says There are so many ... but a few include: ...the first audible inhale of Jeff Buckley's breath on "Hallelujah" (all the way to the end) ...the guitar flourish 20 seconds from the end of Elliott Smith's "I Better be Quiet Now" ...when the drum and spindly-sounding guitar comes in about 2 minutes into Josh Ritter's "One More Mouth" ...the whole last minute of Radiohead's "Let Down" Not to be redundant, but great post! and Welcome to Mog!

  29. ookpik says Late to the party, but this is such a great list I'm adding a couple anyway! - 0:33 of Trompe Le Monde by The Pixies, where Joey drops the speed metal riff. - Mt. St. Helens, by Mirah. It's so weighty-- I like putting it at the beginning of mixes, like an incantation. Just when you think it can't possibly build any more, she busts out with this insanely intense declaration, "you were hotter to me than the sun that burned me up the day we went to Mount... Saint... Helens." - The harmonies on the "we will know / what to do" chorus in "Snow, by Elephant Island":http://alohamedia.net/elephantisland/media/elephant-island/snow.mp3. Seriously, the best goosebump harmonies EVER. - "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea." The whole album beginning to end. - And my Jeff Buckley pick (everybody's got one, I see!) is "Morning Theft"
