WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

CD Packaging

Posted over 3 years ago
I thought I would share my day's task and get your votes on packaging. I was given a double gatefold mini-digipak where the booklet slides into one pocket and the CD into the other. This album package originated in France so it's square instead of rectangular. There are quite a few little extra bells and whistles full color on both sides of all the paper , etc.Am I wasting time, money doing a non-standard package? Or do people appreciate this extra effort in the final days of CD's. Are odd shaped packages too annoying?

  1. etcvisitor says it depends on how non-standard you get. i think when you make something really creative people really say whoa that is crazy (didnt skeleton key win a grammy for the best packaging once). i dont know if digipaks are such a non-standard packaging anymore. i do like the gatefold stuff because it is more reminiscent of vinyl. i think the people who like vinyl will like it a little more and i think that the people who dont care wont dislike it due to the packaging. so i guess im saying: yes it is worth the time and money because it is an added benefit for certain people while not detracting from the product. but it still depends on how much time and money.

  2. Good says I, personally, am annoyed by most of the non-jewelcase CDs in my collection. They get dirty/scuffed/ripped a lot easier. The glue gives out after a few years in a good percentage of them, too, and so you get a loose tray or unflapped flaps. Maybe it's just my OCD but my favorite is when somebody does letterpress or some kind of fancy printing and manages to get it inside of a jewel case.

  3. lemontwist says No Code (Pearl Jam) was my favorite non-standard CD case. Personally, anything that uses less plastic is cool with me. :)
