So years ago, I when I first started focusing on writing songs for real, I was a Hip Hop producer. This was back 91 or so, and back then I was diggin' in the crates for the rare stuff. Back then, I have already been playing bass and guitar for years and knew about a lot of kinds of music as well and had my parents playing Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire in the background. I knew about some rare joints and my skills and beats always got good response.
Flash forward to 06 and I'm chillin' with my old friend Domino and he's working on some new beats...I drug out my old EPS Keyboard and played him my old joints and he liked a few of them. I dug up the records and gave them to him-I'm working on my own Trip Hop project, The Opposite of Faith, which is THE best stuff I've ever done (and at this point, Hip Hop bores me to the point of pain...).
A couple of weeks ago Dom tells me that one of the joints I put him on to was going to likely be the lead single off the new Souls of Mischief record and so far its getting strong radio reception. Now let me be clear-I hooked up Dom with the Sample, he used it a little differently than me-I am NOT taking credit for the song, but I am saying that I've got a hell of an ear...;-)

very cool - congratulations!!! what a great way to start the new year!
Thanks!
thanks for the heads-up, J. "and at this point, Hip Hop bores me to the point of pain..." - there was a noticeable absence of hip hop in the recent crop of best-of albums. i wonder if there were none or the good ones just didn't get attention.
@Poebegone
Hip Hop's in a very weird place right now...I actually started listening to it in '79 when I was a little kid (I know, aged myself). It was fresh and exciting. I pretty much stopped right in 96 right when Biggie was killed (by Shuge Knight, yes I said it). I do remember around that time some ad exec was on TV talk about how 'Rapping' was the perfect way to deliver an advertising message because its a lot of information in a short period of time. I almost threw up.
I think the main thing is that it became a race to the bottom because the goal was to get paid. I'm not against getting paid but that can't be your only motivation if you're creating music and art-you have to make something that people value-that's what Hip Hop forgot...
...but the whole thing is a nice blast from the past. Hiero has always focused on making phat beats and I'm glad one of mine (sorta) made the cut...
ah, you did say it. (; getting paid is a bonus that no one should have to apologize for, and indeed you are right, if that is the only motivation, then your heart is not in the right place.
cheers, and happy new year!
