Australian Prime Minister is Bush's Dogsbody
over 5 years ago

The comments made a few days ago by the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard regarding the Democrats and in particular Barack Obama do NOT reflect the opinions of the majority of Australians.I left Australia not long after John Howard became Prime Minister and I have seen nothing but continuing small-mindedness and fear-mongering as a staple of his leadership. I have continued to vote against hi

New Year's Peeves

I hope I am not alone feeling like this but New Year's Eve just kinda bums me out. I am curious what your New Year's Peeves are. Here is an abbreviated list of mine:1. Amateur drunks. If you are gonna do anything well in life there is usually a training period. Please respect the drink and get in shape beforehand. 2. People that make the sound “WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!” for no apparent reason. Shou

The Carol Moratorium

I am putting forward a motion that states that:1) from this day forward nobody should be allowed to record another god damn Xmas carol unless the artist is gonna avoid making yet another crappy Contemporary R&B version of that song2) if someone records an xmas carol in this style they should voluntarily gouge out an eyeball with a rusty garden tool. Hopefully they should have learned by the sec...

One With Whomever

A few nights back we played in Brooklyn at Union Hall. The show was sooo fun for us. The biggest part of it was the fact that the people there were an amazing, intense, audience. As a musician it seems to be the greatest gift when people are really intently listening. It is one of our greatest wishes to be able to play for people in a way so that the line between musician and listener is erased...

The First Good Cry

I am always curious what the first song that made somebody cry was. It is always interesting to hear what the response is because it usually happened before someone has developed any kind of refined musical aesthetic. It is usually from a time that was so much more innocent. For me it was "Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton. I remember driving down Portage Avenue in Winnipeg in the early spring in my M

Ahh Francois.

I can't help sharing an odd touring anecdote. In '99 and 2000 I was playing keyboards in Marianne Faithfull's band. There was a really fun and absolutely zany group of people involved with those tours. Never a dull moment. Brian and Andy, the two Scots, were eternally hilarious and never at a loss for the finest quick, dry jabs. Brilliant and sweet Barry Reynolds was much quieter and trickier with

Forbidden Music

When I was a kid growing up in Canada (Winnipeg to be precise) there seemed to be tunes that were forbidden. There were a lot of bands that you would probably get your ass kicked over. If I was to bring in a Smiths (The Cure, The Cramps, New Order, Depeche mode, Skinny Puppy, among many others...Joni Mitchell) record to a hockey practice I probably would have wound up with a Mark Messier model ...

George and Kris at Carnegie Hall

Saw George Jones and Kris Kristofferson at Carnegie Hall the other night. Great way to spend Hallowe'en in NYC. Kris was really great. So honest and such beautifully raw music. Felt like you were listening to him in a friend's living room. Very moving.I am a George Jones fanatic but I gotta say I was a bit disappointed in the Branson-esque quality of the show. However,it was so great to hear Georg
