WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

The First Good Cry

Posted over 2 years ago
I am always curious what the first song that made somebody cry was. It is always interesting to hear what the response is because it usually happened before someone has developed any kind of refined musical aesthetic. It is usually from a time that was so much more innocent. For me it was "Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton. I remember driving down Portage Avenue in Winnipeg in the early spring in my Mom's blue Pontiac. It had a white vinyl roof and pretty impressive rust damage from all the salt on the winter roads. It was early spring and the snow was just beginning to melt and the sun was so bright. The snow tires were whirring away on the wet streets. The song came on and absolutely got me. I don't know what it was about it or why it happened. My Mom asked me why I was crying and I said "I don't know. It is just the music."

  1. Kate says I might as well be completely honest: age 17, coming down off mushrooms, listening to a scratchy vinyl copy of Getz/Gilberto. "The Girl from Ipanema" made me cry! I've never been able to casually listen to that song again.

  2. Hattie says That's an amazing question. I can't thing of the first song that made me cry. There are songs in films that have made my cry. For instnace, when I was a kid, we went to see The Color Purple in the movie theatre five times. The third time I cried when Celie and Nettie reunited, and I started crying because the music started playing (and because I'd seen it before, I knew they were about to see each other and get all giddy). I was young, but that was the first time I realized how much I love my two sisters.

  3. Kay C says There was a song called Last Kiss that was on the radio when I was a preteen....one of those tragic tales of a wreck on the highway and the guy's girlfriend dies in his arms. (Can't remember who sang it, but Pearl Jam does a cover.) The music wasn't evocative, particularly...but it was such a melodramatic story, I used to cry copiously.

(Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want This Time and Asleep.) I remember laying down on the floor with the speakers on each side of me just bawling.

  8. SatisfiedMind614 says But as for me...I think it was Pearl Jam's 'Yellow Ledbetter"...which is odd because the version that was on the Jeremy single that I had, i could barely even make out the words he was singing...its was just something about the way that song sounded...and we were coming home from a funeral of a classmate and friend of mine in high school and it just caused the floodgates to open...

  10. goodmusiconly says I'm pretty sure that my first would have been James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" ... "Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone. Susanne, the plans they made put an end to you" ... aargh, it's brutal!

  13. Smooth Hegemon says Nina Simone: "Strange Fruit." Heard it most of my life: didn't really get it until I was about 16. And that voice...so creepy.

  14. gijibae03 says leann rimes, "how do i live" a tad embarassing, but true. i was 17, and a secret romance with an older boy had ended not too long before. it was a very tumultous affair with lots of ups and downs, and i had believed somewhere in my heart that one day it would work itself out. i don't remember what, but something happened, and i suddenly realized that this love was never going to ever fully blossom. i was driving out of an empty parking lot, and it began to rain a little. this song came on, and then i just lost it. i started laugh at myself about halfway through the song, but then had to pull over and let it all out. ah, memories. :) or i guess this is more appropriate :*(

  15. Ollabelle says It is sooo amazing to read all of these responses. Absolutely love it. The variety of songs is awesome!!! I am so happy that nobody has responded and said that they were listening to Berg's Wozzeck at the age of 7 and it shattered them. I would worry if such was the case... Thank you so much for sharing these moments and songs. Glenn ollabelle
