Help me Hip to the Hop

Posted almost 5 years ago
I’m in the midst of a search at the moment for artists similar to Everlast (especially the White Trash Beautiful album) – the whole hip-hop/blues/folk thing is doing it for me. I’ve always been a huge G Love & Special Sauce fan and I see some pretty interesting musical similarities between the two… but now I want more!! I’ll often search through All-Music Guide and look for “similar artists” and “followers” to try and track down artists that might move me. A recent (for me) discovery through an Everlast fan forum has been Tony C and The Truth and I’ve tracked down a couple of nice tracks from their debut Demonophonic Blues album (which I reckon is a cool album name by the way!).So I guess I’m after the help of the brains trust here in terms of how you all go about tracking down obscure artists when all you have to go on is a “sound” and a few similar artists? And even better, if you are into this whole genre I’d love to hear your recommendations.

  1. Cody B says Me Phi Me Tommy Guerrero and especially Basehead-Play With Toys..I think he invented the hip-hop blues folk thing back 1991.

  2. Oldscooler says Great call Cody B - thanks heaps for that. Just ran a quick scan over Youtube for some Me Phi Me stuff and I dig it. I'd also forgotten about Basehead - I've only heard a couple of their tracks and I think I'll need to investigate more. Many thanks!!!

  3. Abdul Jimmy says Hey Mate, Can't help you with the Hip Hop & Folk stuff, as far as PUNK, well I've been to the Taste of Chaos 3 concert last Wednesdy. The used were awsome, Rise against were quite good but the guy lost his voice pretty early on, maybe from too much party. Aiden tried his best and impressed only teenage chicks. The Gallows were very good, Drop Dead Gorgeous were ok. I don't have all this music on my itunes since I listen to it on Rhapsody for free. Cheers
