For those who click on this link ... and then go WTF is this?Well believe me I do sympathize with your initial dismay at hearing these early Daniel Johnston recordings ... certainly they are not polished ... but if you might suspend your preconceptions for a moment and really listen to the actual songs underneath ... Well then you might discover what many others now recognize as uniquely poignant song craft. What many others now recognize as the genius of Daniel Johnston's music and art.The incredible story of Daniel Johnston (and more) is available here at: http://www.rejectedunknown.com/faq.htmand here:http://www.hihowareyou.com/

  2. Ohm51 says Spaklehorse frontman Mark Linkous still remembers the first time he heard Daniel Johnston. "Some buddies of mine were playing his cassettes at McCabe's Guitar Shop," he says. "I was really discouraged about music at the time. Daniel and Tom Waits were the artists who resurrected my interest. Daniel's just amazing - he writes the saddest songs in the world and the funniest songs in the world. He instantly became precious to me." Linkous likens the early cassettes, which were recorded on a $59 boombox and are as lo-fi as they come, to "field recordings…a cappella balladeers from Virginia, things like that. They feel like priceless documents." Linkous has collaborated with DJ to release Fear Yourself

  3. Ohm51 says Thank You for posting that Ddachmo ... I knew about the film but hadn't seen that particular clip of it yet. Really this is both a very sad and inspiring story ... and the more I listen to Daniel's music the more tender and heartrendering it becomes. Caw

  5. Ohm51 says Wonder why you can't play any music? ... it happened to me once ... that all play buttons disappeared ... I closed my browser and reopened, and it fixed itself. I had this song in rattling through my head when I woke in the dead of the night ... the part where he is bemoaning facing life without Laurie ... "but you loved another and now you're a mother ..." Where the stark reality of that registers ... its really something. caw
