My New Year's Eve

Posted about 5 years ago
I hate New Year's eve. It's one of those holidays that makes you feel like a jerk if you're doing what you always happen to do on a Sunday, Tuesday, or whatever night. I found myself in my studio around 9:30pm on Sunday playing around with some loop ideas and what not. I was practicing my cover of Lover's Spit by Broken Social Scene, and then started making up something new. I erased all the loops to the Broken Social Scene track I had recorded, and broke it down to just the shaker and the hand claps. I then sped it up to about 100bpm. Put down an Fmaj7 chord arpeggio type of thing followed by a couple other riffs. Looped a field recording I had of some children playing along with some piano. I had the lights down, the vibe up, and I started playing and singing over this loop. It became a pretty exciting 20 minute experience I think. My lyrics started with something about New Year's eve, champagne, and a new year's kiss, because it's not the new year without your lips on someone else's lips. That repeated and swelled until it became the guttural yelling of "please, try...please, please try...oh god try.." I like a good singing yell. It's effective. Don't know what I was talking about, but it was emotional I know that. I don't have that performance. It was just me and the room. But here is that loop I played over and over, and crescendoed into something big. http://www.sonomawireworks.com/riffcaster/post.php?/3150
