I fly a lot. Twice a week. Sometimes more. I haven't spent more than a week in the same place in over a year. I do not like to fly. But I tolerate it, and here is my secret. Whenever it's turbulent, I play Glosoli by Sigur Ros and I turn it up as loud as my headphones will go to overcome the roar of the engines. And I watch the heads of the passengers bob back and forth as the plane moves side to side and up and down. And I imagine the whole thing in slow motion, as the plane begins to come apart. The ceiling tears open and a few of the passengers are sucked out. I too am sucked out, but still strapped in my chair. People scream and cry. But I am serene sailing through the sky over 30,000 feet to meet the earth. And then, when the song ends, I start it over again. Sometimes I wish I had a video camera so I could film all those heads bobbing back and forth in unison, and play the footage on stage or in my studio, so that I could write my own soundtrack to it.

  1. lemontwist says Sounds grooooovy. My favorite part of airplane rides is the turbulence. I think I wrote a haiku about it but I don't know where it is...

  2. curbyourentropy says That's morbid :-\ Haha, kidding. Well, it is kind of morbid, but oh well. Sigur Ros is great... that's what matters.
