WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Mme. Makeba

While I am still up I thought this needed to be heard by more than just me. Simply beautiful and powerful. Feel free to direct me to a great Miriam Makeba full-length release in the comments, because I have this song from a compilation. Good night.

"Simply beautiful and powerful" describes it well.  That guitar playing sounds so un-American and so South African.

You might enjoy her version of Manha de Carnaval.

Sorry I meant Sergio Mendez, I think Teena M. might have done an album this style, but I can't find it. I was really into the afro-cuban thing in the 90's for a while.

    I like Sergio for sure.

Spike: funny that you mention the guitar. I thought it sounded like the little bit of Grateful Dead I have heard, something kind of subtly rhythmic but "pretty". But that could just be my Dead ignorance speaking because I have been quite uninterested in that band for my whole life.

I know her name only from a German HipHop song from Freundeskreis. Good to hear the music to the name at last ..

For her early recordings, there are two compilations called "Best of Miriam Makeba and the Skylarks" which come highly recommended. This track, I note, was recorded in Conakry in 1974, and as such sounds more sub-Saharan than her more South African records, being much more influenced by Malian/Nigèrian female vocalists.
