Travelling Riverside Blues

Posted almost 3 years ago

Packing, or at least the idea of packing as a looming threat, is such a drag. Going from NOLA with the whole family up to Cincinnati to do some non-profit legal work. Mixed emotions are in order for a trip back there: good baseball, stuffier culture, family with the good and bad aspects. It should be interesting to compare our ever increasing fondness for the Crescent City with the old grounds of the river city on the Mason-Dixon line. And by the way packing your whole family of four for a three month hiatus is complicated and burdensome. I am starting to think we are crazy for all the ambitious things that Stacie and I try to pull off.

Your exciting challenge should generate many fascinating experiences, which, in the hands of someone as articulate as you but with actual moments to write them down, would make for a rollicking good account of triumphs and near-disasters.

When I read the liner notes to a CD white bicycles -- making music in the 1960s of various recordings produced by Joe Boyd, Boyd wrote this about "Crossroads" by Eric Claption & the Powerhouse (vocal by Steve Winwood): "I spent a Saturday afternoon in Electra's Soho [London] office with Clapton, trying to find the right track to show off his guitar skills.  I suggested adapting a country blues to the urban electric sound and we quickly zeroed in on Robert Johnson as the favoured source.  I liked 'Standing in the Crossroads' and he preferred 'Travelling Riverside Blues'; the final version may be called 'Crossroads' and feature that song's opening verse, but the rest of the lyrics and the famous guitar riff are from 'Riverside.'"  Clapton later used it in Cream.  Thank you for having your post here get me finally to listen to that riff and compare it to Clapton's.

That's a bit of a cultural exchange program you got going on there.  At least you're going that way in the summer.  From a weather perspective I imagine that's a smart move, although I'll bet New Orleans is more of a fun place to be, at any time of the year.

Yeah more fun, but without the familial babysitting that Cinci offers I might as well be in Fargo, except way hotter. And man is it already hot here. That has made the packing that much harder. We have been in the 90's for the past 5 days.

We were getting pretty muggy and hot the last couple of weeks, but a front came through yesterday and really chilled things off--down to the 70s.  That's probably the last time we'll see those temps until September.

I hate moving..I'm good at it, but I hate it. It's not like you are running away..You are running to something. Bringing somthing good back home.

Apt tune, travelling to and from river cities. Alwayd liked the Zeppelins version of this tune, but I prefer it just as Real Robert Johnson did it.

The Fake RJ and Blind Lemon have been pullin' my coat recently

And Spike thanks for the literary compliment, I only wish I had enough energy to keep a diary, but I will try to be more mogish this summer.

    A mere coincidence, that! :P

I was away for a long time for Easter in Greece, then came back to a whole new MOG and wanted to get the feel of it. I'm definitely here now :)
