A Mazzy Good Ol' Time

Posted about 1 year ago

I have gone on the record that I love/hate hippies, and for a long time that extended to folksy alt rock. I am not really sure that Mazzy Star fits that mold, exactly but I have always had that kind of association. Probably because a lot of kids I knew were into the Doors, Phish and smokin' joints at that time. Maybe it has something to do with the vision I get of running through a field of poppies when I listen to "Fade Into You". But the power of teenage crush can usually conquer the more cerebral biases of being a head strong dude. So big crush was on the fine Hope from Mazzy Star, with her beguiling pop music and mysterious love child waif looks. No amount of polyester adidas clothes and fat laces could cover up my fondness. What ever happened to Hope Sandoval? Two favorites here for you:

The ubiquitous break through:

The killer guest vocal with The Jesus and Mary Chain:

alright, I'll cop to liking "Fade In To You" back in the day.  Not enough to "invest" in any Mazzy Star, but a nice tune.

I'd call them dream pop, but genre is an illusion :) What matters is that I really like 'em.

All I know is what wiki tells me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hope_Sandoval

Well then let's just call them a classic 90's band.

If I'm not mistaken, the track with The Jesus and Mary Chain is titled "Sometimes Always".  A good one. Thanks.

loved and still love this group. As for hope, she tried her talents at a solo career, I think she put out two albums

I think I have some Mazzy floating around my hard drive, somewhere . . . listening to them always conjures up senior year of high school, when I was introduced to them by the drugged-out dude who sat next to me in Spanish class.  He also hipped me to Jane's Addiction, and seriously broadened my Pink Floyd knowledge, for what it's worth.  Good album, but part of a time I don't revisit very often.

    Levek - no problem

Kev & Chuck - I like them too. I will buy the album if I ever spot it in a used bin. I actually think it is very funny how uptight about some things I was as a teen while the whole time I thought I was pretty rad. I mean, why not buy it? It was a fantastic single you know!
