WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

We'll Give Ourselves New Names

One of my favorite songs of all time has to be Brand New Colony. It's just spectacular. The imagery and the clever writing and catchy yet "smooth" tune, coupled with the great electronic music, really make this song a masterpiece. I think that it is often overshadowed by "Such Great Heights", and, while I love that song, I must confess that I enjoy this one more.First, it opens with a distinct series of notes. If the Mario Theme is genius because you only have to sing the first three notes before someone recognizes it, then this one is close with four (or, really, two... but they may not get what you're headed towards with just two).Second, it starts off with a really interesting lyrical tune. It doesn't appear to be rigidly segmented (a trait it shares with at least parts of other Postal Service songs). The first line manages to somehow blow you away and at the same time leave you waiting... somehow you know that there's even better stuff to come."I'll be the grapes fermented/bottled and served/with the table set/in my finest suit/like a perfect gentleman"The next one establishes what's going to be the theme of the song: whatever it is that makes you comfortable/protects you/makes you happy, I'm going to be it. I'll be the lovely evening out, and I *am* that fire escape where you sit and reflect and relax."It's such a... pure way to phrase it, but the song doesn't stop there."I'll be the phonograph that plays your favorite albums back as you're lying there drifting off to sleep"This line ties with the first one as my second favorite, and it leads into one of my all time favorite lines ever:"I'll be the platform shoes/undo what heredity's done to you/you won't have to strain/to look into my eyes"That line gets me every time. I was playing this song for a friend while driving around town, and he kind of closed his eyes (only briefly; he was driving) and said "mmm..." Like, kind of along the lines of when you eat something really delicious and you say "Mmmm!" like that, except, I guess, less loud. And then, after another favorite line (which I kind of include with the previous one), it leads to kind of the climax of the song:"I want to take you far/from the cynics in this town/and kiss you on the mouth/we'll cut our bodies free/from the tethers of this scene/start a brand new colony/where everything will change/we'll give ourselves new names/identities erased/the sun will heat the ground/under our bare feet/in this brand new colony/brand new colony...""Everything will change, oooh-ooooh..."Just... absolutely poetic. I don't know of anyone who doesn't get an image in their head for those words. On a side note, that girl I was telling you about... she told me today that she woke up humming this. How cool is that?
