Over the past five years or so, the influence of Bruce Springsteen has come back with a vengeance, with traces of his style appearing on albums by Arcade Fire and the National, among others. However, the Gaslight Anthem are the only band that embodies both the style and the spirit of the Boss. Also hailing from the Garden State, the band comes armed with a slew of influences, embracing a garage aesthetic and gritty punk riffage. Though these comparisons have followed the band since their 2007 debut, Sink or Swim, they take on a new light on the song "American Slang," their new album's title track.
Featuring a series of defeated lyrics that scream working class ("The fortunes came for the richer men / While we're left with gallows"), you're convinced that singer Brian Fallon really has been to hell and back. The music itself, much like Fallon's singing, owes much to Springsteen, but it's their modern perspective that truly makes this song a pwerhouse of its own. While their influences can be easily identified by listeners with a basic sense of rock history, the band transforms them just enough to make their own contemporary slice of Americana. By keeping hold of their roots while looking to the future, "American Slang" showcases a band with unlimited potential.
