For the past two days I've been under the weather, but there will be nothing that will hold me back from getting to the Blitzen Trapper/Iron & Wine concert at Babeville (Ani Difranco's church here in B-lo) tomorrow night. I lit up the other night when it hit me that I was finally going to be standing in the same room as Mr. Sam Beam. I'm thrilled, just thrilled. I've already prepared myself for everything my body may feel as the sea of lyrics gently flow from his mouth and, with each song, fill the venue from ground up, submersing me in a deep, dark place. It's where question lies and no good answer lives. And it's a place that brings an aching sense of happiness, the kind only found beneath a layer of pain.
I read this description of Sam Beam's work and it completed my entire day: "With vocals that unravel like the whispers of a long-lost lover and riffs that trickle like rain off a tin roof, Beam's Iron & Wine songs are so beautiful they're debilitating--whether they're lulling a listener to sleep or unearthing memories that were better left buried." Nothing gives me greater joy than to read words that have been strung so perfectly together; it leaves a smile hanging on my face all day.
