Demo's How did THIS turn into THAT?

Temptation (Original Demo);

.

Sounding like a poor mans 'Tainted Love' the original version of Heaven 17's 'Temptation' drones on a bit...and then it changed...a lot. Both where produced by BEF (Heaven 17) so who got hold of it and gave it the horn?

Getting Carol Kenyon in to give it better female vocals and a orchestra arranged and conducted by John Barker obviously helped, but it makes you wonder who stops everything and says 'No, we are going to do it like this instead'

.

Black Affair (What the Beta Band did next, pt3)

It's Real;

.

.

BETA BAND FRONTMAN GOES BACK TO THE FUTURE;

Like Gruff Rhys's recent Neon Neon project, this eccentric experiment from Steve Mason sees him embracing the 80's with fervour. Sonically, it's a departure from both the Beta Band and his side-project King Biscuit Time, the acoustic guitars and hazy psychedella replaced with crisp drum machine beats and, on it Goes Like This, a delirious melange of Detroit techno and kinky sex-sample lyric. Holding it together is Mason's almost plaintive voice and a feel for the era's melodic simplicity, as on the OMD - like Just Keep Walking.

.

Rupert Howie - Q Magazine.

.

Filling in the Gaps; No. 196

.

Don't believe a thing you read on; http://www.myspace.com/blackaffair

The Whip 'Blackout'

New single from The Whip, set for release on 14th July 2008.

.

Manchester's The Whip are back with the third single from their electric debut 'X Marks Destination'. 'Blackout' is heavily inspired by original acid house mixed with the electro-rock swagger that once made Kasabian essential listening before their creativity was stifled by hanging around with Oasis for prolonged periods. The track eventually builds to a climax that will have floppy-fringed indie fans reaching for disco biscuits while 'crazed ravers' will suddenly find themselves babbling incoherently about the virtues of Rough Trade's back catalogue. Yes, a true meeting of the minds - head on!

Barringtone - Snake In The Grass

You may have heard Barringtone frontman Barry Dobbin in his previous incarnation with quirky Parlophone underachievers Clor, whose debut Love And Pain was well received but failed to make any huge breakthroughs. Doubtless their rubbish name contributed.

OK, Barringtone isn’t much of an improvement on the name front, but the band’s first single certainly points to potential greatness. Heralded by a bizarre rock-opera intro and a thunderclap of guitar and drums (seemingly lifted from a completely different track), Snake In The Grass is a politely danceable urgent pop tune - until the band wilfully mess with the time signature every few moments, as though they are willing you to look awkward on the dancefloor.

The band’s debut single, produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s Jaz Shaw, also bravely attempts to redress the balance for the criminal underuse of the word ‘wahoo’ in modern pop. Q - Magazine

The album was a great success in the UK and in U.S. clubs and was one of the first house music albums to cross over to the mainstream charts, particularly in Europe. Group member Kevin Saunderson (along with Juan Atkins, who produced one track) is renowned as one of the originators the Detroit Techno sound. Lead vocals on Paradise were performed by Paris Grey.

The album was retitled Big Fun for its U.S. release, and the ballad "Power of Passion" was replaced with "Whatcha Gonna Do with My Lovin'" when that song became popular in the U.S. The original U.S. pressing, however, contains the former.

A top-three success in the UK, Paradise spun off four top-twenty singles (three of which hit the UK top ten). The first four singles released from the album topped the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. A remix album featuring songs from Paradise was released in the UK later in 1989.

Sage advice that's been handed down by previous generations

Some of this stuff is remarkably specific:

* "Remember to fuck around a lot, when I was
growing up we weren't allowed to."

* "Never look at your mum when she's eating
a banana."

* "If anyone in Brazil tries to mug you, kick
them in the balls till they drop to the
ground, then stamp on their throat."

* "You learn something every day... and then
forget it every night"

* "Never try shitting in a wicker waste paper bin."

* "Our family are too handsome to fight. Leave
that to the Uglies."

* "Forget looks an' tits an' shite. All ya needs
from life is a woman with a heart of gold and
a fanny like a jar of worms."

Also 'mon bison' warns, "don't listen to every bit
of advice old people give you. I once believed
what an old guy told me but it turns out he was
lying: They WERE the droids we were looking for."

More;

New Oasis Album; Dig Out Your Soul

The Gallagher’s unveil title and released date of their new single and seventh studio album.

25 June 2008 - The new single from Oasis will be entitled The Shock Of The Lightning which will hit shops on 29 September and will be followed by the band’s new album Dig Out Your Soul on 6 October

The album is produced by Dave Sardy who previously worked on 2005's Don’t Believe The Truth. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London and mixed in Los Angeles, and includes tracks by all four of the band’s members.

It also marks a new approach for the band’s main songwriter, Noel Gallagher, as he explains:

"I wanted to write music that had a groove; not songs that followed that traditional pattern of verse, chorus and middle eight. I wanted a sound that was more hypnotic; more driving.

"Songs that would draw you in, in a different way. Songs that you would maybe have to connect to - to feel."

The first single - The Shock Of The Lightning - is described as "the most recognisable Oasis song on the album" but Noel insists that it still illustrates his new style of songwriting.

"If The Shock Of The Lightning sounds instant and compelling to you, it’s because it was written dead fast." He explained, "And recorded dead fast. The Shock of The Lightning basically is the demo. And it has retained its energy. And there’s a lot to be said for that, I think. The first time you record something is always the best."

Dig Out Your Soul will also be the first album to be released on the band’s own Big Brother label worldwide.

Matt Everitt - bbc6music

Let's go back, back, back to when even the B-sides where quite good;

The Colourfield were formed in 1984 in Manchester, when former Specials and Fun Boy Three frontman, Terry Hall, joined up with ex-Swinging Cats members Toby Lyons and Karl Shale. Despite all three of them originating from Coventry, they made their homebase in Manchester.

Musicians; Throw the arrogant Prima Donna’s on the scrap heap….

As the landscape of the industry continues to change, musicians have shown they no longer need record companies to survive or sell their music. Now we can see the industry no longer needs musicians. Check out this example of machines doing it for themselves;

Of course you have got to give them the basics first, but once they are shown the ropes they knock out those tricky solos again and again without a bum note. This robot was programmed to play John Coltrane's magnificent solo from Giant Steps - years of refining his improv chops funnelled into a note perfect rendition in perpetuity. Does it matter that you lose the human emotion?

Radiohead challenged fans to remix their track Nude. One of the most intriguing versions sees the track reinvented on old computer parts. A ZX Spectrum, a dot matrix printer, a bunch of hard drives and a scanner are all you need.

Watch it here

Wild Beasts - 'The Devil's Crayon'

The Devil's Crayon sees Tom Fleming swap vocals duties with usual lead singer Hayden Thorpe. With its refrain of "We are so many tiny pieces" and Tom's yearning delivery, the song shimmers in widescreen around a sense of location, melody and wonder at the scale of things. The Devil's Crayon sounds like the theme song to a new kind of very English, (probably un-filmable) road movie.

Ryanair to offer 'beds and blow jobs' to business class customers

Ryanair's boss has sparked controversy after boasting that a new Transatlantic spin-off airline will offer "beds and blow jobs" to business class customers.

Michael O'Leary, the colourful head of Ryanair, told a stunned audience that while passengers in economy would pay as little as 10 euros to fly across the Atlantic, business customers would pay between 4,000 and 5,000 euros and get free oral sex.

Responding to a question from a reporter during a press conference in Germany on Wednesday, O'Leary said: "In economy it will be very cheap fares, we say about 10 euros... and in business class it will be beds and blow jobs. In business, it will all be free including the blow jobs."

His comments stunned a female linguist who was translating his answers and caused astonishment among the audience, before everyone broke into laughter.

O'Leary, who has a fiery reputation, then poked fun at the Germans when he was told there was no word for "blow job", saying "Terrible sex life in Germany".

An airline spokesman yesterday confirmed Mr O'Leary's comments.

He said: "We confirmed at the press conference that the proposed Transatlantic Service will have a very low-cost economy cabin with seats priced from €10 one way, and a very high quality business class, providing better service than BA or Virgin.

"The working title for the business class service is 'Beds and Blow jobs'."

Ryanair will carry 52 million passengers on 711 routes across 26 European countries this year.

http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/

Future Sound of London (1988 - present)

Amongst all the Indie crap I post there is always space for a little bit of Techno from the parties I used to attend in the late 80's, early 90's; Orbital, Underworld and Leftfield are all well represented on Mog, but only one little post for Future Sound of London? Better make that two.....

First recognized as the dance duo behind the club hits "Stakker" (as Humanoid) and "Papua New Guinea," Future Sound of London later became one of the most acclaimed and respected international experimental ambient groups, incorporating elements of techno, classical, jazz, hip-hop, electro, industrial, and dub into expansive, sample-heavy tracks, often exquisitely produced and usually without easy precursor.

They can Bang as well;

The Other Two (1993 - 99)

The Pop side of New Order; The Other Two are Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert. The band name refers to the fact that the other New Order members, Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook, had already released solo records when the first The Other Two record, the single "Tasty Fish," came out 1991 and peaked at 41 in the UK Singles Chart.

The Other Two's albums are The Other Two & You (1993), on which Gilbert handled the vocals, and Superhighways (1999), which also featured guest vocalist Melanie Williams from the band Sub Sub on some tracks (Superhighways, You Can Fly, One Last Kiss).

The Other Two have been involved in motion picture scoring; they created a theme song for the TV series Common As Muck, America's Most Wanted. Other soundtrack work includes Cold Feet, Making Out and series two of Cracker. The Other Two created music for the UK TV programme Reportage, but this was credited as New Order.

The band project led by Peter Hook of Joy Division, New Order and Monaco between 1989 and 1992. Saw them 3 or 4 times; so, so, heavier sounding New Order with Hooky taking lead vocals. Only the 1 album and a couple of singles...(poor...but those gaps need filling!)

Onstage fights and broken amps being hurled into the audience are just some of the elements likely to occur at a Cage the Elephant show. Most importantly, the staple of all of their live performances is brilliant rock ‘n’ roll music: as thrillingly aggressive as the Stooges and as anthemic and raw as the Kings of Leon’s first LP, this is a band that will remind you why you fell in love with rock ‘n’ roll.

Cage the Elephant (average age of 20) are a five piece from Bowling Green, Kentucky. Having upped sticks and moved to Leytonstone, London last Autumn, they are set to win hearts and minds in the UK into 2008 as they bring their incendiary live shows to the UK.

50's Britain now....

If Moby had made Play using regional British accents instead of American, it might have sounded something like this...

The ground-breaking Radio Ballads series - created by Ewan MacColl, Charles Parker and Peggy Seeger for the BBC during the 1950's and 1960's - were masterpieces of broadcasting, weaving the voices of those living in everyday Britain with songs written from, and about, their experiences.

Broadcaster takes these voices from the past and sets them against a new musical backdrop, breathing fresh life into their stories. 'Primary Transmission' maintains the integrity and humour of the original recordings and, with a nod to Fatboy Slim and Moby, offers a unique interpretation that is moving, haunting and very addictive.

How Fat Sue helped The Ting Tings get a Number 1 UK single

The Chris Moyles show is the 2nd biggest breakfast radio show in the UK with a regular audience of 9 million out of a UK population of 60 million.
.

.
THE Camden Town muse of Lucian Freud dubbed 'Big Sue' had seen a naked painting of herself reclining on the sofa sell for a record $33.6 million in New York. She was then interviewed by a news reader who called her 'Fat Sue'. You can hear what happened next and the conversation that took place on the Chris Moyles show the following morning;
.

.
Moyles (19st) started playing the following remix every day in the week The Ting Tings released 'Thats Not My Name'
.

.
'That's Not My Name' went straight into the charts at number 1 knocking Madonna's '4 Minutes' off the top spot.

The have been a number of artists over the past few years who have played an album in its entirety live, but Sparks have a gone a little bit further....

The Sparks Spectacular will be taking place in London from May 16th through to June 13th with one album per night being played, starting with 1971's album 'Halfnelson'. The only concession made to man's physicality is that, whilst the order of the albums will be chronological, there will be some days off during the run! Having influenced a number of today's acts, an impressive supporting cast have just been announced for each Sparks show including;
The Young Knives, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, Philippe Tasquin, Rosalita, The Rumble Strips & Electric Soft Parade.

Images of Madonna kissing Britney Spears and a hoodie appear alongside installations of crashed cars.

People can add their own stencil work to the tunnel walls in a three-day exhibition, opening on Saturday.

Joy Division
**
Cert: 15, 93 mins
Starring: Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Peter Hook, Ian Curtis
You may feel there isn’t room in your life for another Joy Division film, especially if you thought Control was a tad overrated. This brilliant documentary, though, deserves your time: exceptionally well made, it gives not only the definitive insider account of the band’s brief existence, but makes it clear why they matter so much. Director Grant Gee has scored some real coups, electrifying unseen footage and the first interview with Ian Curtis’s girlfriend Annik Honore among them. It’s funny, too, thanks to the bathetic humour of the three surviving band members. “She was sophistication to someone who used to ride pigs for fun,” says Stephen Morris of his impression of Honore.

Rock Against Racism

Carnival Day in London
27 April 2008 - Thirty years after a group of music stars decided to Rock Against Racism, the Love Music Hate Racism carnival is celebrating the efforts of 1978.

The Good, The Bad and The Queen, Hard-Fi and Jay Sean are headlining the anti-racism concert in east London. Organisers hope 100,000 people will attend the free carnival in Victoria Park.
The original gig was headlined by Tom Robinson Band and featured a legendary performance from The Clash.

The 30th anniversary carnival now revisits the same park, with Tom Robinson playing again. This time the line up includes Babyshambles, Paddingtons, The Specials’ Jerry Dammers, and Clash collaborator Don Letts.

We stand against racism
Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly

Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly are taking to the stage as well – and Sam from the band says that we shouldn’t compare the two events:

“I don’t think it’s about rivalling or matching or living up to a legacy. It’s about a group of current artists, and artists from that time, and artists involved with music of various different kinds coming together and standing for one thing – which is we stand against racism”.

It nearly didn’t happen though. Morrissey had to step in to save the festival from possible financial ruin. Organisers said it was facing a £75,000 deficit after a main sponsor withdrew. But Morrissey has made a personal donation and rallied together his management, promoters and booking agency to help make up the shortfall.

"This is something I am committed to and we appreciate everyone coming together so quickly to make it happen," he said.

One of the organisers, Martin Smith, says he hopes today will make as many young people has possible go back to school, college, or work and spread the anti-racist message.

Kingmaker (Early 90's UK Indie Band)

Queen Jane

/
The band began playing and touring, before making their recording debut with "The Celebrated Working Man" EP. After this they signed up to Chrysalis Records and released a second EP, entitled "Waterproof" in 1991. They were also immediately courted by the music press, who invented a niche category for the band, which they dubbed "New Cool Rock".

With a fan following building up, and lyrical austerity in their melodic music, they were tipped by some as the "next big thing". Their debut album Eat Yourself Whole was well received, and spent three weeks in the UK Albums Chart, reaching a high of number twenty nine in October 1991. In addition, the single release of the album's title track, "Eat Yourself Whole", reached the Top Twenty of the UK Singles Chart.

During 1992 they were supported on tour by a pre-Pablo Honey, Radiohead.

/
They then landed an American recording contract with Chrysalis. Kingmaker's second album, Sleepwalking, was released in 1993. Although the album was well received, frontman Hardy felt that it signalled the end of the band's creative independence and consequently was the death knell for Kingmaker.

Cud (Early 90's UK Indie Band...)

Cud is a portion of food that returns from a ruminant's stomach in the mouth to be chewed for the second time....sorry, wrong page;
/
The four-piece formed in Leeds in 1987, reportedly when they discovered a discarded drum kit in a skip. They recorded a Peel Session on the 16 June 1987 before they had released any records, John Peel being sufficiently impressed by the demo tape that they had sent him.

/
After building up a strong local fanbase, their popularity grew more widely, and they were signed by Imaginary Records in 1989, who would release their first two albums, When in Rome, Kill Me and Leggy Mambo. 1991 saw Cud beginning to make an impact on the UK Singles Chart, and they signed to the major label A&M, the big-label budget being sufficient to propel them into the Top 40 in 1992 with "Rich and Strange" (#24) and "Purple Love Balloon" (#27), as well as reaching number 30 in the UK Albums Chart with third album Asquarius. A further top 40 hit single followed in 1994 with "Neurotica", however, their moderate success and cult status was shortlived after they failed to overcome musical differences, as well as major label A&M having a problem with the bands attitude.[2] This would then ensue that 1994 Showbiz album be their last, with Potter being replaced by Mick Dale (who would later join Embrace) shortly before the band split in early 1995.

Sam Sparro - Funky Friday...

So I was around Camden last weekend with all the Indie Kids when I accidentally caught the second half of Sam Sparro's set. Now, I'm not into funk that much but Sam's vocal talent's are excellent when playing live and his second single has exploded in the UK (See below)
/

/
Born in Sydney, Australia, Sam's second single, "Black and Gold" debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number 23 on March 24, and then climbed 19 places to number four on March 31 due to heavy download sales. On 13 April, it rose to number 2. It peaked at number two on the UK iTunes chart. His debut album Sam Sparro is due for release on 28 April 2008, as confirmed by Play.com. His first single, which was released in 2007, was called "Cottonmouth".

Camden Crawl....Day 1

/
After queuing for 40 minutes, I got my wrist band and program then headed to a local bar to study it while having a late lunch and a few Becks....
/
In Koko at 6 to catch a subdued Ide Marie followed by an exuberant 'Does It Offend You, Yeah?' who played to a packed audience in a Klaxons stylee...
/
I REALLY did not want to miss Los Campesinos!, so headed up to The Enterprise which is a great Bozzer, but only has a tiny room upstairs with a capacity of 150. (We got bored between bands and did a head count...)
/
Catching the end of Simone White (some people really should not be let out of there bedrooms..) we quite enjoyed the full on punkie rock of Lovvers(although I usually do like to understand at least one word per verse...)
/
Every 30mins at the Crawl you get a text message telling you how long the queues are outside each venue. Most where 10-15 minutes, The Enterprise was 60! We are in for a show and Los Campesinos do not disappoint.
/
15 minutes into the show security come running in and pull the band off because the ceiling is bending under all the bouncing. There are impassioned pleas for everyone to calm down and 80% of the audience then sit down. The band come back on and also play 2 songs sitting down before complaining of bad backs and standing up for the remaining tracks.
/
It really was weird seeing the band play, You, Me, Dancing! to audience who are sitting down and waving their arms their arms in the air!
/
Really wanted to go and see Robyn at Koko but everyone I talked too said they where going, so I thought, no, we aren't getting in, so headed home happy for an early night.

.
Some ten years after their last formal release, trip-hop pioneers Portishead are releasing their fourth album, cleverly named Third, on April 14.
Its hard to explain just how BIG Portishead's Dummy was back in 94/5 in the UK. It seemed that almost every track from their début album was used on almost every TV trailer, and still people couldn't get enough....

Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) & Miles Kane (The Rascals) are The Last Shadow Puppets.

Directed by director Romain Gavras, their debut video is as big as Mother Russia, following our intrepid heroes' adventures in Moscow and includes ice skating, an Orthodox priest, tanks and a chorus of Russian Soldiers.

The Futureheads are back, bolder and better than ever, exploding back onto the scene with their new album ‘This Is Not The World’. Embracing the punk-rock ethic like never before, Barry, Ross, Jaff and Dave are releasing their third album independently and taking control of their own destiny. It’s going to feel like the first time, all over again…

Annoyed and frustrated too many times by the bureaucratic nightmare that music had become, the band split with former label 679 in late 2006. A silently busy year followed which saw the band writing and recording, and launching their own label Nul Records, solely to release music by The Futureheads. Free of major label shackles, the band are taking back control and relishing being their own bosses.

‘This Is Not The World’ was recorded in 3 weeks in the summer with super-producer Youth at his studio ‘Space Mountain’ in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Andalusia. About as far away atmospherically as you can get from the bleak Scarborough farm in which they recorded ‘News And Tributes’, the band couldn’t help but be influenced by Youth’s enthusiasm, and describe the album as one of ‘defiance, optimism and joy.’

Underworld - New Single; Beautiful Burnout

Underworld are well and truly back. It was a blistering 2007 for Rick & Karl having played Hollywood Bowl, Central Park and a sell out UK tour. Their latest new studio album ‘Oblivion With Bells’ has been heralded as their best album since the seminal ‘Dubnobasswithmyheadman’. Now comes the second single from the album, “Beautiful Burnout”, which has become a firm live favourite, and with mixes from Mark Knight and Pig & Dan, this package is of the highest order. The luscious trademark synth swathes and swells ebb and flow with majestic yet melancholic vocal melodies. Beautiful indeed.

The Chords - Maybe Tomorrow (1980)

1980 in the U.K; the Mod Revival is in full swing with the release of the movie Quadrophenia and The Jam are making their mark on the charts. The Chords receive press and airplay by association with the Mod scene. It can be said that they were part of the revival, but sensing this is a bad move the band try to distance themselves from the scene. This would have been a wise move but the press weren't going to let them get away with it. Anyway, enough bad vibes - what about the tunes?

'Maybe Tomorrow' is recorded in December and released in the New Year. A brilliant 45, a pure blast from start to end. This song alone has more balls than any tune at the time and by the end you are knackered just listening to it. It gets them an appearance on 'Top of the Pops'. It is followed by 'Something's Missing' - another slap of energy. If these songs had been the sole output of the band it would have been great.

April see the release of 'So Far Away'. Highlights of the LP are 'Breaks My Heart', 'It's No Use' and the mighty title track 'So Far Away'. If this LP were released now the Stereophonics would pack and go home. The LP charts at number 30. The past year has gone well for The Chords and for rest of the year they seem to be making headway. Two more singles are released, 'British Way of Life' and 'In My Street'. Several radio sessions are recorded and transmitted. The band seem to be on tour continually - highlights include Loch Lomond Festival, Scotland, with Bad Manners, Stiff Little Fingers, The Tourists and The Jam; and their first gigs abroad...

If Duffy continues to release high quality tracks like this she is going to wipe the floor with Adele and give Amy a run for her money.
This remix doesn't change things around too much but makes Mercy even more danceable (if that's possible!)

Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis, Kate Nash and Adele are among its former students, and it gets funding from the Brit Awards to train the next generation of stars.
.
With 10 million albums sold in the UK, 16 Brit Award nominations and 14 Grammy nominations between them, graduates of the Brit School in Selhurst, south London have become some of the biggest names in pop.
.
As well as Amy, Adele, Leona and Kate, its alumni include fellow female singers Katie Melua and Imogen Heap and Grammy-nominated R&B duo Floetry.
.

The Brit School has taught 8,000 students since it opened in 1991.
In the indie fraternity, members of The Kooks, The Feeling and Athlete all passed through its state-of-the-art studios, classrooms and theatre.

The Sonic Hearts – ‘To Be Someone’

The Sonic Hearts, a big-hearted fivesome who sit squarely in the lineage of ultra-melodic Liverpool bands that unites The La’s, The Coral and, more recently, The Troubadours.

Frontman Sean Francis Butler has a voice that cracks in that classic Merseyside way, all grit and yearning, and current single To Be Someone is the perfect vehicle for it – a sweetly-shimmering anthem that builds to a harmony-drenched climax, fulfilling the band’s (mildly pretentious) stated desire to approximate “the sound of tiny stars exploding.”

To Be Someone is out 31 March, followed by an EMI-released debut album later in the year.
