Unkle - War Stories

UNKLE - War Stories...Burn My ShadowAfter the brilliance of UNKLE’s Psyence Fiction, their follow up, Never, Never Land took a wrong turn and ended up in a electronica dead end. Reversing back, they have now turned down the street named ROCK! with new album; War Stories. They still have the beats but the throbbing Restless and endearingly overwrought Burn My Shadow show the way. James Lavelle sings Hold My Hand lamentably enough to explain another slew of vocal collaborators, this time including The Cult's Ian Astbury, Massive Attack’s 3D and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme. The transition is more self-conscious than Lavelle might have wished, but although this is still very much a work in progress, UNKLE are now heading in an interesting direction…....Thanks to John Aizelwood at Q

  1. Dale says This would absolutely be in my Top 10, if I could include advance releases. "Burn My Shadow" hits a home run.

  3. Jonh Ingham says In the end, after all the musical byways and highways, all we really want is a BIG riff. I'd love to see this live, very loud.

  4. Mike the Knife says Yeah. For instance, that "Restless" riff is a monster!

  5. Marigold says Very solid record. I have spun it a several times and have been quite happy with it. Not my normal style leanings, but a nice break from my usual vices.

  6. Lord Alfreston says Couldn't agree more about Unkle's last album could never get into it but thought I'd give James another chance, after all he did set up Mo Wax. Glad I did much better album if a lot heavier. I always thought psyence fiction was great but the critics hated it! Still what do they know. By the way the packaging for the ltd ed is pretty special plus an extra disc with all the tracks as instrumentals but I haven't got round to listening to it yet so I don't know what they're like. Really like the opening track as well but it's only 22 seconds. What's all that about?
