Amon Tobin – Foley Room

Posted over 2 years ago
..Brazilian nomad, Amon Tobin; Abuser, torturer and bender of sound into such works as ‘Permutation’ and ‘Out From Out Where’ has a history of taking vinyl, pulling it apart and reassembling it into fantastic soundscapes over diaphragm vibrating beats. After moving from the UK to Canada and finishing the commissioned soundtrack to Ubisofts Splinter Cell game, Chaos Theroy, he has decided to do things slightly different with the ‘Foley Room’.This time, Tobin decided to record original samples out in the streets and countryside of Canada, before bringing in session musicians such as Sarah Page and The Kronos Quartet, but does it sound any different? Not as much as you would think. There is still the gut churning deep bass and beats of old, now overlaid with these more organic sounds but the melodies of old seem to have been lost along the way. They are still there as in first track ‘Bloodstone’ with its beautiful string and piano melodies twisting and turning in on themselves, but as the album goes on, more and more reliance is placed on the drum and bass which means the whole is just not as captivating as say ‘Supermodified’. This is still a fascinating piece of work with Tobin sidestepping of most voguish production techniques but at the end of the day this Mogger prefers more melody...1. "Bloodstone" – 4:13 2. "Esther's" – 3:21 3. "Keep Your Distance" – 4:48 4. "The Killer's Vanilla" – 4:14 5. "Kitchen Sink" – 4:49 6. "Horsefish"" – 5:07 7. "Foley Room" – 3:37 8. "Big Furry Head" – 3:22 9. "Ever Falling" – 3:49 10. "Always" – 3:39 11. "Straight Psyche" – 6:49 12. "At the End of the Day" – 3:18 .Released on March 5, 2007 by Ninja Tune.Mogs (out of 10) MMMMM M

  1. Anna says I have to say that Tobin's music is very special, imo. I found the way he blends sounds to be fascinating, though sometimes a bit difficult on the ear. Damn, I just love album trailers! Thanks, Neill.

  2. mktackabery says I can see why you might be struggling with this work Neill, but stick with it. I am finding it be a true progression for Tobin. From the IMDB: Foley:The art of recreating incidental sound effects (such as footsteps) in synchronization with the visual component of a movie. Named after early practitioner Jack Foley, foley artists sometimes use bizarre objects and methods to achieve sound effects, e.g. snapping celery to mimic bones being broken. The sounds are often exaggerated for extra effect - fight sequences are almost always accompanied by loud foley added thuds and slaps. Jack Foley first came to prominence as the sound-effects artist on Dracula, Show Boat, and The Phantom of the Opera, all made in the 20s, when sound recording for film was still young. Read more about Foley here. Tobin has said very little about this record so far, which is intriguing, but to me it is a serious progression from just ripping up vinyl to pushing out into the organic world to make his soundscapes. Instead of the organic elements "lightening" up the sound, the pieces are actually darker, scarier, and more "technological" sounding than some of the warmer things he did with pure technology. That alone just fascinates me.

  3. ciphermedia says Have only recently discovered Tobin from a recent post here about him & have yet to get hold of any (waiting for my emusic account to tick over). So I don't know what his previous work is like, but I have to say that I love this stuff and am really looking forward to chasing it up soon.

  4. Hermes says I quite like it to my own surprise. Ad mentioned on the other MOG, I prefered Mr. Scruff and The Herbaliser to Amon Tobin so far. Maybe I should have a look to his older albums too. Never disregard the Ninjas ;).
