WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Japan

Adolescent Sex..Japan was a British rock group, formed in 1974.The original members were:David Sylvian (the most beautiful man in pop!), Mick Karn, Rob Dean, Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri. The band debuted on record with 1978's Adolescent Sex and subsequently Obscure Alternatives, which both sold well in Japan and the Netherlands (where the single "Adolescent Sex" was a Top 30 hit), they also gained some popularity in Canada, but nowhere else. Both albums were widely dismissed by the British music press as being distinctly outmoded at a time when punk and New Wave bands were in the ascendence. However, tracks such as "Suburban Berlin", "State Line" and "Rhodesia" suggested a creative depth and sense of melody to the band's output which would hint at their future direction.Their third album, 1979's Quiet Life, heralded a significant change in musical style from the earlier largely guitar-based music to a more electronic sound, with more emphasis on Barbieri's synthesisers, Sylvian's svelte baritone style of singing, Karn's distinctive fretless bass sound and Steve Jansen's odd-timbred and intricate percussion work. Standout tracks included the title-track "Quiet Life" (a belated Top 20 hit in 1981), "Halloween" and "The Other Side of Life".Their following two albums, Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980) and Tin Drum (1981) on the Virgin label, continued to expand their audience as the band refined its new sound and unintentionally became part of the early 1980s New Romantic movement..Art of Parties..Thanks to mickimicki .Filling in the gaps. 1. Jammy Jeff says I really miss Japan Neill. I don't think they did a bad album (yes I like the glam Rock stuff too). My personal favourite is "Quiet Life". I think it's the point where Sylvian and the band found their strength, and their primitive Pop/ambiant soundscapes. The track you mentioned "The Other Side Of Life" is such a beautiful album closer. They also did some great covers, particularly Smokey Robinson's "I Second That Emotion". I remember them releasing the startling "Ghost" as a single, a sparse ballad which at the time was a very brave release. I tried hard to follow Sylvian's solo career and the first couple of albums were really good, but then he began to get more and more arty and his albums became too difficult for me. If I had to pick one album it would definitely be "Quiet Life".

  2. Neill says 'Adolescent Sex' in the middle of the Punk Storm just seemed really odd at the time just like early Ultravox....

  7. Augusts1 says Not heard of these guys. Interesting. That 2nd vid/song sounds so much like early Duran Duran I bet DD was heavily influenced by Japan. I've heard of David Sylvian, his name sounds familiar to me. Daft Spunk-- hahahahaha!!!!

  8. ciphermedia says Loved Japan - I think just because they were different from everything else around at the time. On the Daft Spunk front, if you're from over here (Australia) or New Zealand, 'spunk' means someone gorgeous, and has no 'drippy' connotations... It does mean you have to be careful with what you say when you're in the USA or elsewhere though. Funnily enough Anna, if you were from Australia, Neill's avatar would mean that he's a bit of an airhead.... :)

  13. goodmusiconly says wow, I thought I was the only one who ever listened to them. I loved them and have vinyls of Quiet Life and Gentlemen Take Polaroids, and I also really liked Sylvian's solo Gone to Earth. I haven't played any of it in many years, though. This takes me back, thanks!
