The Happy Mondays

Posted over 2 years ago
No, No, No! Only 2 posts about the Happy Mondays? Not good enough. Let's be 'avin it LARGE.Wrote For Luck ..Manchester pop impresario Tony Wilson discovered the Mondays (then managed by Phil Saxe) at a battle of the bands contest held at his Haçienda nightclub. The story goes that Wilson signed them to his label, Factory Records, even though they came in last. Their first album, Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out), debuted in 1987. A number of other albums followed, most of which were released in the United States on the Elektra Records label. By the late 1980s, the Happy Mondays were an important part of the Madchester music scene and personified rave culture. Shaun Ryder fought against a serious drug problem (and lost) which typified the scene and the era.Musically, the band fused indie pop guitars with a rhythmic style that owed much to house music, techno and northern soul. Much of their music was remixed by popular DJs, emphasizing the dance influences even further. In terms of style and dress, they crossed hippy fashion and ideals with 1970s glamour. Sartorially and musically, the band helped to encourage the psychedelic revival associated with acid house. One of their most popular songs was "Lazyitis (One Armed Boxer)", featuring a surreal duet between Ryder and country music legend Karl Denver.."I grew up in New York in the 1970s, and I've seen a lot of people who live life on the edge. But I've never before seen a group of people who had no idea where the edge is." Tina Weymouth.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Mondays.http://www.happymondays.info/.Hallelujah..Oh dear, they are back at this years summer festivals (..in theory, don't hold your breath).Filling in the gaps. 5. Jammy Jeff says "your twisting my melon man". Brilliant. "Thrills and Pills..." is still a must have album. I have a drinking pal who was bass player for the last act (Adventure Babies) Tony Wilson signed to Factory before they went bankrupt. The label were shipping tons of cash over to Jamaica to finance the recording of the Mondays "Bummed" album. I'd love to know who the bright spark was who thought of sending the biggest drug addled band of all time to Jamaica to record an album. Anyway, Factory was flushing money down the toilet and Wilson had this contract arrangement where all the bands were owners of the label. Hence, when they went bust, my mate's band had to shell out a massive amount of money because in effect they were all bankrupt. He finished paying his debts just a couple of years ago. I daren't mention Wilson or the Happy Mondays to him. As you can imagine, he's spent the last 15 years paying for them.
