WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Black Grape

In the Name of the Father..Black Grape were from England, formed in 1993 by former members of Happy Mondays, Shaun Ryder and Bez. They recruited rappers Kermit and Jed, plus guitarist Wags, formerly of the Manchester-based group the Paris Angels. Recording of new material started that year, although the group were not under contract. In 1995 they signed to Radioactive Records (an imprint of major label BMG) and released their debut album. It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah immediately charted at number one in the UK, and spawned three top-twenty singles.Black Grape's music is funky and eclectic, using varied instrumentation and samples. Ryder's lyrics seem to derive mainly from nonsense rhymes and humorous catch-phrases. It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah received critical acclaim in Britain, but the group made little impact in the U.S..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Grape.http://www.prideofmanchester.com/music/blackgrape.htm.Kelly's Heroes..Filling in the gaps. 1. Augusts1 says I love Black Grape & have this cd & another of theirs, I can't recall the title off the top of my head right now. I'm surprised they didn't do better here in the U.S. but then again only one of Happy Mondays cds did very well over here in the first place. I love Happy Mondays & have most of their cds but I'm not the average music listener over here, lol!

  3. Neill says It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah had the most success in the UK and all 3 tracks above are taken from that. There is, as usual, a Best Of....

  4. Augusts1 says I'ts funny in the wiki of this band it say they broke up in '98 when Ryder fired the rest of the band! You know what that means, he was probably outta control & the rest of the band tried to intervene so he fired them all. Ryder was known for major alcoholism & drug addiction but supposedly got cleaned up. I have a concert film of Gorillaz performing their entire 2nd cd from beginning to end & Ryder sings on the song "Dare". He is obviously high on some substance cause he slurs his words & is a total buffoon, but in a rather endearing way(not sure how he does it but he pulls it off).

  5. Neill says I saw that. Ryder has taken so many drugs in the past; I think that is now his natural state.

  6. Augusts1 says lol, I think you're probably right but to be that out of it he'd have to be on something!
