Cocteau Twins

Posted over 2 years ago
Iceblink Luck..Robin Guthrie (guitar) and Will Heggie (bass), both from Grangemouth, Scotland, formed the band in 1980. At a local disco, Nash, they met Elizabeth Fraser, who eventually provided vocals. The band's influences at the time included Joy Division, The Birthday Party, Sex Pistols and Siouxsie & The Banshees. The name Cocteau Twins itself comes from an early (unreleased) song by fellow Scotsmen Simple Minds. Their debut recording, Garlands (released by 4AD Records in 1982), was an instant success, as was the subsequent Lullabies EP.Although the entire band was praised for their performances, Fraser received the most attention. Even on their early recordings, her singing was startlingly unique, and with little precedent. At times barely decipherable, Fraser seemed to veer into glossolalia and mouth music..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocteau_Twins.http://www.cocteautwins.com/.Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops (live)..Thanks to everyone who have already posted regarding the voice of a goddess....Filling in the gaps. 3. Neill says Your right Dale, but I spent most of last night on YouTube watching Cocteau Twins videos, so, any excuse......

  4. Dale says No worries. And no joke on the Siouxsie influence; you can hear the sound of Garlands clearly in the Siouxsie song "Night Shift", from Juju.

  6. mktackabery says ah Neill, you always save me after a hard day. I have adored the Cocteau Twins since someone once passed me a well-worn tape of Treasure . . . ah the days. Still adore them to little teeny tiny pieces. My favorite: Carolyn's Fingers:

  7. Augusts1 says That live vid is AMAZING! I've not seen CT live & I'm surprised that they're able to recreate their sound so faithfully. I ADORE CT & was into them back in the day. My first CT record was 'Bluebell Knoll' & I bought it solely because the cover art was so cool. Little did I know what I was in for but immediately loved it. I did the same w/my first New Order record 'Low-Life'. Cd covers just don't do the cover art justice. The New Order record has a band of white translucent paper w/the band name printed on it in silver wrapped around the album cover, the design is so cool. I have most of CT's albums & 'Treasure' is one of my favs. Talk about pioneers in innovating music. Sure you can hear Siouxsie's & Sex Pistol's influence but CT forged their own path that many have tried to imitate over the years(like Lush, Curve, Catherine Wheel, Chapterhouse, etc). Elizabeth has done something no one else has been able to really come close in imitating--her stunning, unique, unusual & gorgeous vocals & lyrics. I think Lou Rhodes(who I love, check out my post on her just yesterday) previously of Lamb, is highly influenced in her vocals.

  10. Augusts1 says Actually, "Cocteau Twins BBC Sessions" is a great intro. so you get their live sound. It's a two disc set that I feel is essential to any CT fans collection since it's pretty much a greatest hits live comp. Even though I had most of their music I still bought it cause I wanted to know if they were as good live as on their recordings, & yes they are. I don't normally recommend greatest hits comps. cause you miss all the other great songs on their regular releases BUT this is an exception to my rule. Plus it covers more territory 1982-1996.
