Reports say band are close to reunion deal

Speculation has renewed that The Smiths may be on the verge of reforming.
.
According to a report in The Sun today (October 24), the four original members are close to signing a deal that would see them performing at the Coachella festival in California next year.

It is suggested that Morrissey's new manager - former MCA records boss Irving Azoff - has been instrumental in the proposed deal.

A source is quoted as saying: "It has looked impossible in the past but suddenly it all looks like it could happen. The buzz around the people who used to work for the band is they could play Coachella for a ludicrous amount of money.

"It's closer than it's ever been. The split was a messy affair, but time's a healer." .

With all these expensive reunions we've experienced the past 2 years, I will stop raising my eyebrow ironically only if we get a Joy Division one.

If this goes down, I may even reconsider my self imposed ban on visiting the US (...for political reasons)

No, just sing along with the band while in the audience, although last time I went, 2 of my mates had 10+ pints on board and where doing a lot more than a bit of singing....

Well, I was going anyway, but I'll be sure to powerplay enough that maybe I can touch Morrissey's expanded waist this time. :P

i'll believe it when i see it. but man! if coachella can pull that deal it might sell out. i heard last year the attendance was really bad.

I think that's the idea. Reading and V-festival in the UK sell out 4 or 5 months before hand meaning they have all that money sitting in the bank earning interest.

Didn't Morrissey turn down a $20 million deal to reform just a couple years ago?  I agree w/ Charley.  It's almost as likely as a GnR album (but way more anticipated).

Just for shits and giggles, let's go down a list of Smiths song titles (not necesarily content) relevant for this post - "These Things Take Time", "How Soon is Now", "You've Got Everything Now", "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get Want I Want", "I Know It's Over", "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish", "I Won't Share You", "Ask", "Stretch Out and Wait" &  "You Just Haven't Earned it Yet, Baby".  I'll go w/ the latter.

If that happens, i'm going.  I don't care if i have to hitchhike, take a train, ride a horse, I will get there somehow.  Although there's a good chance that the ticket prices will completely suck my bank account dry, so I may have to walk there too...

The Smiths are not set to reunite despite reports, NME.COM understands.

Sources close to both members of the band and Coachella have denied that there has been any new move to reunite the group for next year's festival.

A British newspaper had claimed The Smiths were considering burying the hatchet for next year's event.

Meanwhile, the group's guitarist Johnny Marr's manager dismissed the story, telling our sister title Uncut that the Smiths reunion rumours were \"rubbish\".

Morrissey has previously claimed he was offered a near £40 million for just him and Smiths guitarist Marr to reunite for the Californian event in 2006.

A new double-CD compilation spanning the band's career, 'The Sound Of The Smiths', is released on November 10.
