WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

The Wedding Present

Posted over 3 years ago
1985–1997, 2004–presentThe Wedding Present are based in Leeds, England, and where formed in 1985 from the ashes of the Lost Pandas. Their music has evolved from fast-paced indie rock in the vein of their most obvious influences The Fall, Buzzcocks and Gang of Four, to more varied forms thanks to their reincarnation in 2004.

  1. Joxley says Have you heard of their side project "The Ukrainians", they play Ukrainian folk at breakneck speed.

  2. Neill says Just sold the vinyl on ebay (but I have it on CD!)

  3. Sureshot says And they still hold the UK chart record for most top 40 singles in one year (12). The Hit Parade albums are fun but 'George Best' is great. Just like the man on its cover ;)

  4. stevegoz says Loved the original incarnation of the Weddoes and the first two full-lengths by Cinerama; not so keen on the re-formed version. Fascinating fact: I once made quesadillas for David Gedge, his then-girlfriend/Cinerama bandmate Sally, and Simon Cleave. And one of my best friends does the simulated answering machine message on "Maniac" by Cinerama.

  5. haggardpilot says I am simply not awesome enough to have heard this band before. but I really loved this track a lot - enough to search some more stuff down. thank you!

  6. Dale says Wow, like this song. Which album would be a good starting point?

  7. 1234chainsaw says Another vote for 'George Best' as the top Weddoes record -- especially the expanded version. I also thoroughly enjoy a lot of the non-album material collected on 'Singles 1989-1991' (right before the Hit Parade year), the many fabulous Peel Sessions they did over the years, and 'Bizarro' and 'Seamonsters'. Sadly my feeling about the reincarnated version is: eh. Like stevegoz, I prefer the first couple of Cinerama records to the new Weddoes. Doesn't stop me from wearing my old T-shirt with the cover image of the 'Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now?' single on it, though. The Ukrainians mutated from a side project that did a Peel session as The Wedding Present into the separate Peter Solowka-led band. Those hilarious Smiths covers in Ukrainian are the stuff of legends, but I don't really know their original material. Any opinions about that, anyone?

  8. Neill says 100% with 1234chainsaw on this one! So the George Best album first , the music is much faster than the video above....

  10. Sureshot says I'd say Kennedy and Brassneck are there most well known songs. Probably a good starting point too. If you're into covers that do something different then their version of The Monkees 'Pleasant Valley Sunday' and Julee Cruise' 'Falling' from Twin Peaks are interesting.

  11. Neill says ...or, 'My favourite Dress' and 'Everyone thinks he looks Daft'. LOL

  12. 1234chainsaw says Sureshot is probably right about the best-known songs. I'd check out also 'I'm Not Always So Stupid' and 'Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now' from George Best Plus. They bring out the fact that Weddoes were always first and foremost a singles band. As Sureshot also says, they also did a lot of inventive covers. You might not believe your ears when you first hear that super-frenetic version of 'It's Not Unusual' (Tom Jones). Other revelational covers include 'Cumberland Gap' (Lonnie Donegan), 'Him or Me (What's it Gonna Be?)' (Paul Revere and the Raiders), and 'Felicity' (Orange Juice) -- to mention just a few. There's many more. I think Watusi is a good record, too. It's more diverse than the earlier stuff although less of an uptempo jangle freakout.
