Novels based in the Rock World..I don’t know, I’ve read quite a few and a lot of them just don’t seem to ring true. However here are a few that did it for me…Espedair Street (1987) by Iain BanksDreams of Sex and Stage Diving (1994) by Martin MillarSuzy, Led Zepplin and Me (2002) by Martin Millar.Any recommendations?

  1. ivylander says Thomas McGuane's "Panama." When it came out in the last '70s, it was pretty much critically reviled. I think a reappraisal is in order.

  2. stevegoz says I quite liked How Soon Is Never?by Marc Spitz, about a crazed rock writer who wants nothing more in life than to reunite The Smiths. Tom Perrotta's The Wishbones, about the romantic trials and tribulations of a guy in a wedding band, is also worthwhile. I've also heard good things about John Kaye's novels, which I own but haven't gotten around to yet. Espedair Street is indeed fantastic.

  4. Kate says Neill, I don't know anyone in the U.S. who loves Martin Millar. 3 Cheers for posting about him, he is wonderful. If you ever come across a copy of "The Good Fairies of New York", hook me up. I like "War for the Oaks" by Emma Bull, and "The Little Country" by Charles de Lint. Both have a strong undercurrent of music running through them. And De Lint always gives a list of all the albums he listened to while writing his novels. If you are a jazz lover, the best novel I have read about jazz is "The Bear Comes Home" by Rafi Zabor.

  5. fairportfan says Well, if you can get past the writing style, *The Commitments*. And an oddity - an SF/alternate history/rock'n'roll novel, *Wrack and Roll* (if you can find it) Emma Bull's *War for the Oaks* isn't so much about music as it's about a woman who's a hot (in more than one sense) rhythm guitarist who gets involved in a Faierie War in M'pls/St Paul. Great stuff. (And i first heard of Boiled in Lead in it.)

  6. stevegoz says I want to read more Iain Banks. Sadly, only his sci-fi books seem to be in print here, so I scored Espedair and Dead Air from amazon.uk, where the postage cost more than the product.

  9. d0gstar says I've heard good things about Great Jones Street, by Don Delillo, but haven't read it. It's a Dylan fictionalization. Also, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, by Salman Rushdie - read it a while ago, but can't remember what I thought of it. One of the funniest I have read is Never Mind the Pollacks, by Neil Pollack. Snarky as all hell, but what do you expect - a dead on parody, in places
