SOUNDS OF FUTURE PAST AND PRESENT PERFECT

The La's

Posted over 3 years ago
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To make a body of work that is excellent despite being so obviously rooted in the music of yesteryear is a great achievement. The La's one and only album [1990] is so assured that any notions of nostalgic cheese can be waved in an instant; all this despite the band's leader, Lee Mavers, dismissing the material without even a hint of irony. Just to remind ourselves, anyone who believes that familiarity breeds contempt has obviously not cocked an ear to 'There She Goes' but 'The La's' is littered with gems. There's the explosive guitar crescendo on 'Timeless Melody' (its title would have done justice to the album, really) , the hypnotic effect which is induced whilst hearing the final tune, 'Looking Glass' as the pace picks up more and more before reaching inevitably delirious finale. But that aside this has to be known as a classic 60's beat group album with 'I.O.U.' the only track to be accused of over-simplifying the melody. Crucially, sixteen years on this album has aged extremely or maybe it's 40 years, who can really tell? Track Listing 01 Son Of A Gun 02 I Can't Sleep 03 Timeless Melody 04 Liberty Ship 05 There She Goes 06 Doledrum 07 Feelin' 08 Way Out 09 I.O.U. 10 Freedom Song 11 Failure 12 Looking Glass The La's is slang for The Boy's in Liverpool

  3. BellaVendetta says Hard to believe this was pieced together by the producers after he flew off the handle and thought it wasn't any good. And who would have thought you'd see a song about heroin in every wedding karaoke book, tampon commercial and covered by so many Christian bands. Damn that bastard is rich now.

  5. soda says I purchased the 'bootlegs' that came out a few years ago - hoping to hear some additional Las songs and to hear how things sounded live. Mistake. Half the CD appears to have been recorded from the middle of the crowd next to a drunk two fingers in the mouth style whistler. "This song is called Son of a Gun" *THWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE* through the first verse and chorus. Fantastic songs tho.

  7. Neill says Good news! The La's - BBC in Session. Coming out on Universal. Recorded between 87 - 90 there's a punchy urgency to the songs missing from the official debut.
