Joy Division - The Film (Things to do this weekend. No. 1)

Posted almost 4 years ago
The Joy Division documentary is out this weekend in the UK and is getting good reviews everywhere;//Joy Division****Cert: 15, 93 minsStarring: Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Peter Hook, Ian CurtisYou may feel there isn’t room in your life for another Joy Division film, especially if you thought Control was a tad overrated. This brilliant documentary, though, deserves your time: exceptionally well made, it gives not only the definitive insider account of the band’s brief existence, but makes it clear why they matter so much. Director Grant Gee has scored some real coups, electrifying unseen footage and the first interview with Ian Curtis’s girlfriend Annik Honore among them. It’s funny, too, thanks to the bathetic humour of the three surviving band members. “She was sophistication to someone who used to ride pigs for fun,” says Stephen Morris of his impression of Honore./http://www.thelondonpaper.com/cs/Satellite/london/home

  2. Anna says So, any JD footage has the ability to make me emotional, interesting. I'll sneak in pints if you let me borrow your handkerchief. I don't want Neill's report, I want him to adopt me, but he's been turning me down for over a year now. ;) (and I just saw the Banksy notification, YOU ARE MEAN :P)

  10. Bartleby says Neill, you've done it. You've done it the impossible. You've managed to make the *queen* come out of her very long wintry hiatus. I haven't decided yet on what I'm going to do this weekend but you're giving excellent ideas. Thank you very much, sir.

  13. Jonh Ingham says I saw half of it at a screening a couple of weeks ago - I had to leave and it really tore me up. This is just a fabulous documentary. Imagine a Peter Saville cover at 24 fps. It has a lot of humour, visually clever, and fantastic sound. It gets an 11 out of 10 in my book.

  14. missedexit says Can't wait 'til it hits New York, and on dvd for that matter. It's about time this was done, for such an influential band. And people forget that there was a lot of humour w/in the band.
