.....as the UK runs back to the 80's

Posted over 3 years ago

Last summer it seemed like a lot of bands where looking back at the 80's for inspiration, but that light grazing has now turned into a full scale gorging with dozens of new bands turning into big haired, synth-loving pop fiends!

Along with White Lies and Australia's Empire of the Sun we now have La Roux who wasn't even born in the 80's but this track, Quicksand sounds like it was in GTA's Vice City soundtrack...

(I blame it all on MGMT...)

Meh. And meh to the rest of the acts mentioned, with the HUGE exception of White Lies. That's some fine music-crack right there.

That would mean her musical influences come from her parents. Which further means the '80s can now be considered Ancient.

I was standing in line at a sandwich shop the other day and this 17 year old was with his girlfriend, all I picked up on was when he said "...you know that song from the '90s? Safety Dance. Sooo cheesy!". I felt like kicking him.

I love this song and the whole album is pretty good as well, You probably know this song already Neill but it's new to me:

funny Neill. just had some co-workers wagering earlier today whether or not I'd heard (of) Empire of the Sun. Answer was kinda yes, could not get past that garish movie-poster cover.
This is bearable, truly retro and nice chorus...

He, I would include White Lies in the "meh" section actually. Heard the album, but it didn't really impress me. To me it sounded like Joy Division without the heart and with quite some of the prejudices you have about the post-punk genre.

Anyway, La Roux, I'm on the fence about this one. It sounds quite nice, but a bit too smooth for my taste. I don't know, maybe it'll grow on me. I prefer the synth stuff bands like Cut Copy do I must honestly admit.

Quicksand has elements of "When Doves Cry", has it not? -- I kinda like La Roux or "La Rousse" in grammatically correct French for "ginger girl."

I have to agree with dale, and as for MGMT I just can not seem to like them

It's clearly just me, but White Lies does it for me because the meaty bass hits and serious subject matter lend gravitas to their music that La Roux and especially Empire of the Sun lack.

Wow, I hadn't tried the curmudgeon thing before. That was fun. ;)

I'm liking White Lies as well, but the comes a point when influences becomes pastiche, then out and out copying which I think La Roux is up to at the moment. Then again, it is a tune.

I like the song in the video. She needs puffier hair though...

Oh puh-lease, don't give those bastards in MGMT credit for starting the '80s sound. Peaches & Fischerspooner were doing the whole '80s electroclash thing back in '00(but started in the late '90s). So the '80s sound has been in style for quite some time.

Not feeling this, since it does seem like a rerun of Peaches w/o the dirty talk(which takes all the fun out of these songs). Thanks for the headsup though.

Universal is behind this, so expect to hear it a lot.
