MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Second time I've seen the brothers Dulli and Lanegan this Winter. First time was at Bowery Ballroom which was at the onset of the tour. Interesting to hear their live approach develop over time. Was a lot looser this last time, which worked well on some numbers and not on others. Sound was crisper at Bowery Ballroom. Webster Hall sometimes gets washy which didn't help some of the harder rockers.

This tune Idle Hands was incredible at Bowery Ballroom. Just made you wanna put up the devil horns and bang your head. And then that voice......

Lanegan just stands there like a cool statue. I believe that is how the artful mogger Henry put it. He actually does not move the entire show and by about 40 minutes in, it starts to have quite a surreal effect. Though I swear I saw him move a bit on this one the other night. How could one not!?

Dulli was in fine voice and they complement each other well. The disc has taken me a few listens to get into, but there are some real moments of psycho-sexual/whiskey soaked wonder, which is pretty much what the Afghan Whigs and Lanegan are all about. And the combo works well.

They close with a kind of medley tune that ends with Shadow of the Season off of the Screaming Trees' Sweet Oblivion record. That was quite a treat and that riff sounds like a great Dulli riff live. And then there was Methamphetamine Blues off Lanegan's Bubblegum. Whoa, that just killed.

Could the room contain all the smoke and blooze and rawkness? Liked Idle Hands a lot.

unforunately they're pretty militant here in nyc about the smoke, but dulli is above the law

He still has the ashtray holder on his mikestand I'm sure. Mayor Mike can't stop the rawk! I've seen a few Twilight Singers shows in NYC..my fave was over at The Polish Retirement Home (Warsaw) in Greenpoint..Brats,booze,smoke,and rawk.

Hey, Neil, nice write-up. How's your Lanegan growl coming along?

hands down the bowery ballroom has better sound than webster hall. these guys are what i imagine an indie metal band signed to barsuk would sound like...if that makes any sense at all.

jenny, the growl will be quite deep today as i'm recovering from another drive by truckers show last night

charley, this bartender at the local dive put on some japanese indie metal the other night, the singer was a spot on bruce dickinson except for the any word that had an L in it, that was pronounced like an R, which was freaking hilarious - they should make it into a saturday night live skit or something

Cool review, Neil! The show sounds quite a bit like the one I saw in SF 4 weeks ago and greatly enjoyed. "No Easy Action" was another pretty effective Lanegan encore there. Lanegan even smiled a bit after that; I had to do a double-take on that one... (http://mog.com/1234chainsaw/blog_post/147592)
