Ryan Adams: Buzzing From... Coffee?

Posted almost 5 years ago
How crazy is Ryan Adams? You be the judge.Over at Stereogum (www.stereogum.com), they've got a post about a recent Adams show. Here's what one of their readers, Kjell, reports: "so maybe he's sober like he claims lately but he's still TOTALLY CRAZY! At the show last night in Berkeley, CA (7/24/07) he was walking down the aisles before the show taking requests for the setlist. At one point out in the lobby a woman convinced him to call her son on the phone because he would want to make a request. He was followed by two guys not looking very happy about the whole thing like they were handlers or something. Also his banter was ridiculous. Before the first song he kept talking about underwear stuck up his ass. There was also a lot of whispering into the mic stuff like 'i'm fucking professional, i'm oozing professionalism from my soul' he blamed the banter antics on coffee. 'this next track is from 1872, its by tim mcgraw, we don't even know what it means, i use all my energy just to keep breathing' - song played: 'When the Stars Go Blue.'btw, the actual music was fucking awesome. what a rock star mofo."Full story:http://www.stereogum.com/archives/tour-dates/ryan-adams-probably-still-sober-definitely-still-c.html

  2. Jaymog says How Crazy is Ryan Adams? All the way crazy. I saw him play in Ithaca, NY a few years ago. I hadn't heard of him or heard any of his music, believe it or not. I won 2 free tickets from WBER in Rochester, and convinced a friend to come to the show with me. He did two distinctly different sets. The first was the hard rock, and frankly mostly annoying Ryan Adams, and the second set was the almost purely acoustic Ryan Adams that I think most of his fans know and love. He chain smoked, and drank from a wine bottle throughout the set. He talked - a lot. At one point, he started asking the audience questions, and when there was no answer, he just waited. For like several minutes. Kinda reminded me of that very awkward Andy Kaufman comedy skit where you weren't sure if it was a nervous breakdown, or just some cutting edge humor. He played a guitar duet with his instrument tuner, who had a birthday, or some other special evnt in his life. The second set was some of the best music I've ever heard in my life. He is truely amazing on the acoustic guitar. The young college audience didn't really know how to take him, but I think they enjoyed the music as much as I did. Then at the end of the show, he got up, and smashed the acoustic guitar into pieces and jumped on it a few times. I was crushed. The instrument that had made so much amazing music for the past hour or so was in splinters. Regardless of his quirks, I'm a huge Ryan Adams fan, and would love to see him in concert again sometime. He is truely a gifted musician.
