WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

RAnalyzation of Kathleen HannaIOT GRRL? Or complete moron?: The

Okay, let me get the record straight. Years and years ago, I decided to try listening to Bikini Kill. I thought it would be interesting and cool, and downloaded tons of their songs...Oh what a mistake. Now, I am not mocking this band's mark on music. Hardly! They're definitely influential, purposeful, and relevant. Especially today! Just... Immensely overrated. Musically, it's Minor Threat with a girl. Great. Except, Minor Threat was unique for it's time. And that was long over before Bikini Kill. So, I removed their MP3's, and had a laugh.Of course, then I grew more and more annoyed with the presence of Kathleen Hanna. jesu... I observed her condescending Mike Watt of the Minutemen for his 1995 solo album on a answering machine. I couldn't tell you how stupid she sounded. "D'ya know, I got a friend, who was raped, yes, RAPED, by one of your big rock-star friends you're recording with!" and "I'm sick of this whole, I'm a guy, I'm in my early 30's, I'm-a-loser-baby-so-why-don't-ya-kill-me-macho-rock club!"I pray to god this was in jest.Mike Watt is a talented musician. Something... That's frankly, not supposed to exist in punk rock. Kathleen Hanna... Well, isn't. Tobi Vail wrote the good songs from Bikini Kill (Oh, what? Think I'm just patronizing the fairer sex like a typical Riot Grrl critic? No.). Her Atonal shrieking is the same reason why Siouxsie Sioux gets adoration."Oh, she's an artist, because she's female." No fucking assholes. She's a woman putting herself on a pedestal so that she can be excused for non-talent.Maybe I'm off in my statement, agreed. But my issue is, where does she get off, putting down men? Again, I hope it was in jest that the machine message was put on. But JESUS. Just because... I don't know who she could've been talking about on that album. Eddie Vedder maybe? He'd make a good rapist... Henry Rollins? He comes off like one. Oooh. Maybe it was Thurston Moore! Notice how these are all guys, yes. But they're also influential and talented artists. Which, Kathleen, is only half.My point is, I don't want female artists to automatically get credit because they're doing something. I want them to have to be over-and-above. The whole 'rocking with the guys' thing is almost if not equally stupid. But what I really want to see is a band that's so amazing, even the male bands give them props. To quote another overrated female musician, and secretly, the inspiration behind Bikini Kill: "It should be about talent. Not about who knows Fugazi personally." ~ Courtney Love
