McLaughlin Mondays #18 - Acoustic Duos & Trios

Posted almost 4 years ago
OK you need to check that your stereo system is wired correctly for this post if you want to win this competition...Over the years and between bands, McLaughlin has put together some memorable acoustic guitar “happenings” – collaborations that have exclusively resulted in live performances (no studio recordings) with several other wonderful guitarists, namely Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell and Paco de Lucia.Each guitarist has his own hallmarks in style, sound and technique, but when two or three of these guys get on stage together it can be scary, as each pushes the other to greater and greater heights (and there’s no amplification, effects pedals or other electronic safety nets here, it’s all seat-of-the pants, unplugged stuff!).So, from the monster 17-CD McLaughlin Montreux Concerts box set, here’s John with the amazing Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia playing “Guardian Angels”. Although McLaughlin uses a pick and De Lucia plays in a traditional flamenco fingerstyle, they actually sound quite similar on this piece. Both play with a fierce attack, very percussive and blindingly fast at times….so assuming you have your headphones on correctly, can you tell who’s on the left and who’s on the right?

  4. Bartleby says Because cheating is also part of the game, I found this confirming their respective positions: This track is dizzying. The sheer virtuosity of the performance is heady enough, couple this with the intensive playfulness between John and Paco and you have a whole delectation on strings. Thanks MM;
