McLaughlin Mondays #10 - Sessions With Stanley

Posted about 1 year ago
Hi Moggers,Sorry for missing last week's JM post - computer meltdown just prior to the Xmas break (turned out to be defective memory. The computer's, not mine, but my wife thinks I have similar issues).Anyhow, for post # 10 in this mini series I'm offering up a little slice of McLaughlin sitting in on a session for Stanley Clarke's "School Days" album. Although McLaughlin started out as a session guitarist, he has sat in on relatively few sessions since (although he had joined Clarke previously on Clarke's "Journey To Love" album). This piece features Clarke on string bass (both bowed and plucked)and McLaughlin on acoustic guitar in an "unplugged" setting. Very tasty bass playing! As for McLaughlin, he's playing his "Shakti" guitar and exhibiting some of the wonderfully extreme pitch-bending that was a hallmark of his at the time.Happy New Year to you all! Looking forward to sharing more JM stuff and discovering new music from my Mog friends in 2008!MM

  2. Bartleby says John McLaughlin to begin the year. Something tells me that 2008 will be a very good year. The string bass sounds almost like a viola da gamba. It's simply one of the best servings on your McLaughlin menu. - My, I've got so many albums to listen to, to savour the full savour of JM's music Happy New Year and Best Wishes ;)

  3. MusikMagik says Hi Zeppo - those early Stanley Clarke albums were good, eh? Bartleby - Hope you have a great one! Bonus for you both: Song For John (Part II) from "Journey To Love" (as mentioned in the post).

  4. Bartleby says All right now I'm hooked line and sinker on this Stanley Clarke's album. Brilliant. (I'm a sucker for strings (bass or viola or cello - love them all)

  5. MusikMagik says Ah, well careful now. For the most part Mr Clarke tends toward the jazz funk side of things on his solo albums..but you may enjoy that too.
