WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

McLaughlin Mondays # 5 - The Noonward Race in Paradise

Posted over 2 years ago
My first ever encounter with John McLaughlin was on purchasing the Mahavishnu Orchestra's debut album "The Inner Mounting Flame". This was a revelation to me. It was raw power and unbridled musicianship with odd jazz time signatures and it floored me. A couple of years later I discovered this double album with the most bizarre lineup of bands, but buried in there was 13 minutes of live Mahavishnu. The album never was released on CD to my knowledge, so this MP3 was lifted from the original vinyl. It's long, dirty and delicious :-) Check out McLaughlin trading licks with Billy Cobham in this totally self indulgant jam in paradise.EnjoyMM

  1. Bartleby says Dirty and delicious, indeed. I discovered John McLaughlin with Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" and then moved on to meet up with Mahavishnu Orchestra around the "Birds Of Fire" period. I must say I've never listened to this track before and I'm loving every single note of it. I particular enjoyed the break around 5'05''. Bill Cobham is brilliant. Entrancingly elating. The album artwork looks fabulous.

  2. MusikMagik says Nice! Interestingly, McLaughlin was still playing with Miles during the Mahavishnu period, appearing on "On The Corner" and "Get Up With It" (Cobham was on that one too, and it proved to be Miles' last release for six years!). I went in reverse to you - started with Mahavishnu and later explored the Miles stuff, which I love now but will admit to finding a little challenging back then. I'm currently working my way thru the glorious 6-CD set of "On The Corner Sessions". Might have to feature something from that one of these McLaughlin Mondays. Once again, thanks for listening.

  3. Max Load says Billy Cobham was the perfect drummer for them. Love this high energy stuff.
