McLaughlin Monday #3

Posted over 2 years ago
Purported to be the album that got the attention of Miles Davis, consequently leading to the great man offering McLaughlin a place in his groundbreaking fusion ensemble of the late 60s / early 70s, “Extrapolation” is a must-have for any modern jazz fan.Joined here by John Surman on baritone sax (!), Tony Oxley on drums and Brian Odgers on string bass, this is McLaughlin’s first effort as a band leader and a very creditable one. McLaughlin would play again with Surman shortly afterwards on Surman’s “Where Have I Known You Before” album, although that was eventually reissued and credited to McLaughlin, presumably for commercial reasons, since by that time McLaughlin had become enormously popular with his Mahavishnu Orchestra. Ironically it has been re-released yet again as one half of a double CD package under John Surman’s name, “Dawn Sessions”. Given that the original CD is out of print and changing hands for over $300, “Dawn Sessions” is a far more economical way to pick it up.In contrast to the distorted, driving sound that McLaughlin would soon be delivering with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, here’s McLaughlin vamping on a semi-acoustic (Gibson 335?) and showing some of the incredible dexterity that would soon catapult him into the top ranks of guitarists and help to make him a member of Miles Davis’s band.MM

  3. Bartleby says Maybe I'm used to his Mahavishnu material but this 3'52'' track leaves me wanting for more. It almost sounds as it were incomplete. An unfinished character which is still most delectable. John Surman's sound is magnificent. Looking forward to the next McLaughlin Monday. Thanks MM

  4. MusikMagik says Cody B: I'm pleased you liked it. This track is pretty representative of the whole album, so I hope you end up with a copy in your collection. I agree it's more accessible than some other stuff from the same era. Dachmo: Well thanks for this, especially as I gave you a hard time over the themes thing ;-). Really pleased you're enjoying the series. Some real gems to come! Bartleby: I know what you mean. Shortly afterwards McLaughlin was playing on 20 minute plus takes for Miles Davis, so I guess that changed his thinking on what could be done! As for Surman, he's still playing but I hate to say, I haven't heard any of his more recent stuff. Does any Mogger have any of his ECM recordings I wonder? Thanks all!
