WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Covers #1: From Ann to Booker T.

Posted 11 months ago

Man its finals week, and you know how those could be. I just racked in serious hours of studying and decided "Fuck! I need a break." Its been raining all week and the weather that comes with it doesn't exactly help. I look outside the window and look for some kind of song to put me in the mood while I chillax and snack for a bit. "Hmmm...rain...Oh I know..." Actually the thinking process here was longer seeing as theres ALOT of friggin songs dealing with the rain. I went through hella heads and decided to go with Ann Peeble's "I Can't Stand The Rain" from her album of the same name (Released in 1973; although I've been running into a crap load of other release dates). As if you can't already tell that I LOVE SOUTHERN SOUL.

I originally intended to put her song next to the Booker T. & The MG's version for a sick contrast but damn the limitations! haha. Besides there are a few wonderfully done posts with Ann Peeble's song and her bio so check it out.

So I decided to go for a cover version of this beautiful song and this cover happens to be by the backing band of STAX, Booker T. & The MG's. I decided to go South on South on this one (I have other covers) Their cover of Ann Peeble's "I Can't Stand The Rain" has a nice BLUESY feel to it with the zest and essence of, what else, SOUL. What else can I say say about this track? I love their intro of the song which starts off smooth until you hear that guitar riff...and then when the drums come and then....WHOOH! Just listen to it while I get me a snack.

Hi Records + STAX = Magic

FACT: This song comes from their album "That's The Way It Should Be" released in 1994 after a 17 year hiatus. Includes a good amount of covers and originals. Some say this a horrible come back album...check it out and and see for yourself.
