Some Sweet 70's Sounds

Posted over 2 years ago

When you are as old as I am (not telling, but you can guess), and you come across a newer group or artists bringin' back the sounds of the 70's, in a good way, it's a refreshing sound to behold.

This artist can morph his sound into that of many of our favorites from the past. He can get T-Rexy, Bowie-ish, Neil Young like, Stonezee, soft rock Bread style, and the list goes on. IMHO, this is one great CD.

He is secretly Canadian, so keep that to yourselves. Just listen to some of these choice tracks that will take you back to the good old days, while also exposing you to some great new music.

Waiting For The Sunrise - David Vandervelde

California Breezes

Old Turns

Cryin' Like The Rain

Lyin' In Bed

If there is one thing that Canada exports to us it is great music.

though I don't really hear those glam roots, I do the others and find this eloquently retro-crafted...that's for the spotlight!

I remember the 1970's a tad differently, since these were the years of the Hawaiian music renaissance, from Gabby Pahinui to Kalapana. David Vandervelde reminds me of a somewhat different musician, The Cosmic Cowboy, Michael Murphey. Still, not bad, in a Seals & Crofts kind of way.

    nice RX!

his first record, the moonstation house band, has the glammier t rexy sounds, here's two vids of those, definitely get the record, it's an amazing debut LP

my fave off that record is murder in michigan, a very moody blues esque number that screams with maturity

wish i could post my tracks but they're protected and locked, dangit!

he's on secretly canadian, but he's from amsterdam by way of michigan i believe and now resides in nashville

seen him live a few times and have both his records on vinyl, which are perfect vintage pieces on the whole, and he co wrote a few numbers with jay bennett from wilco

he recently worked with bobby bare, jr. on a covers ep of only bread tunes which sounds a bit forced unfortunately

Neil, thanks for the additional history and the vids! I would have thought that you'd have to be Canadian to be on that label, but I guess not. Either way, he's a great talent.
