This Is Ridiculous

Posted almost 3 years ago

Most of this CD does not perhaps sound as you would expect the Dolls to sound, but that don't make it bad.

I like this bluesy tune. It sounds like it's being sung by Tom Waits, and has a swampy almost Bo Diddley beat, but played the way John Fogerty would play it.

If that isn't a strange description, I don't know what is. But me not being real familiar with the old Dolls sound, that's what it first conjured up in my mind. You may say otherwise or say it sounds just like the old Dolls you know and love.

interesting description man, and i get it.

i think this disk is coming out this week and i'm psyched to hear it.  yeah, i DO know the Dolls and their sound over the years and i believe that a track they were playing awhile ago from this release ("'Cuz I Says So" i think was what it's called) is a little more reminiscent of the older sound, even though more currently produced.  definitely curious to hear the whole thing and see where they've gone.

i've worked with David and Syl in several incarnations over the years and the bottom line is that they've got a lot of directions that they work well.  David made noise as Buster Poindexter and on the Harry Smiths, and i've even got board tapes of Sylvain doing things like Rick James' "Give it to Me Baby" at CB's when i was mixing that are pretty awesome.

I guess this may not be true for everyone, but i just love good stuff and when bands open up abit i can still enjoy it.  i don't need an absolute "reincarnation of......" album.  i always talk to new artists about how even though they may be all over the place, if they can just zoom in on something and get established without confusing people, they'll have freedom later on.  U2, whether you like them or not, is a great example.  "Achtung Baby" wasn't "October" or "Boy".

So, i dig this track even though it's not vintage Dolls.  let's see what else they've got.

funny story to end this post.  when the Dolls played the Avalon last year I was asked by the LA Times reporter what was different from the old days.  i said that not many people had done valet parking with a latte in their hands in the NY 70's.  they quoted me as saying that the band was not doing self-parody, but still rocking.  i DID say that, but my comedy career went down the tubes.

Yes and almost "BigTime" Waits feel, and a bit of the Zimmy with a growl.  I do have a particular fondness for bands who are not afraid to let Leo Fender's creation find its own way.

Robin- Very interesting background and story.  Head on over to AOL to hear the whole CD. Only a few tracks sound like vintage Dolls. The rest, I believe is much more tame and a newer sound for them- but like I said, I don't think that's bad. I think they stretched in all the right directions- I'd be interested to know what you think.

Mr. Sun- that's funny, I was going to throw the Bobness in the description to, since he's sounding a lot like Waits these days. Glad you like this.
