An outlier like this may have its origins as fun at a sound check or something. I remember a hard rockin' LA band called Tzar that went through of a couple weeks where the bass amp kept shutting down right in the middle of a set. The lead singer improvised the first couple verses of "Cracklin' Rose," and the crowd egged him on. Next time I saw them, Neil Diamond had become an unlikely part of their repertoire!
