Sometimes, but not too often, I dislike being left alone with my thoughts. They can be an evil bunch, ganging up on me, overwhelming me, leaving me see to seek the sanctuary of music.>>>The music must be complementary to the mood one seeks.>>>There are folks who will drink themselves blind in the coming twenty-four hours. They are myriad, from every walk of life and every social strata.>>>On May 19th 2008, A report of a study cosigned by 37,000 plus scientists, including ... MORE

Eurovision contest vs the Pogues

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(8)
What I can't understand is why Germany, UK and France bother to contribute songs and MONEY to this song contest when they end up in the bottom 5.Does the money come out of the peoples taxes? Maybe we should all get in our boats and tow the island away from Europe, somewhere warmer, personally I would steer the island to the Caribbean seas. I dont feel I belong to this Europe any more. The Eurovision contest is not kosher.I dont have any Eurovision winning entries to play ... MORE

A Curse Upon You, Oliver Cromwell

(39)
While I'm half-Irish on my mother's side, St. Patrick's Day has relatively no positive resonance for me whatsoever. For many years, I lived on the eastern end of 86th Street in Manhattan. As such, my street acted as the veritable alimentary canal for virtually every parade that marched up the Upper East Side. This meant that on every St. Patrick's Day, a mob of green-clad morons would stagger down our street to puke in our gutters and skirmish on our sidewalks. Suffice to ... MORE

Fairytales In Detroit

Artist:
Album:
Track: Fairytale Of New York - (with Kirsty MacColl)
(15)
Blog post image preview So yesterday was hectic. Crazy. Busy. Worked hard. Got out of work had to do more work. Had to drop off some printing material at a local studio, see my love and then go to a show. Chuck Ragan (of Hot Water Music) and Ben Nichols (of Lucero) playing acoustically. But more of that in another post. Between work and rushing to the studio Fairytale Of New York by the Pogues came on the radio. Not only a great song but a great band. But I placed this song as a bit of... MORE

It's been a while since I've posted on this thing, but I was feeling particularly enthusiastic about this song just now.
http://www.markryan.ie/ftp/Pogues%20-%20A%20Rainy%20Night%20In%20Soho.mp3
"Rainy Night in Soho" is one of the most gorgeous songs I've heard in a while, and I thought I'd take the time to say that I strongly feel, as strongly as most people feel about "important" matters (i.e. the economy, religion, etc.), that more people should listen to The Pogues. The... MORE

Blog post image preview Ok down to the last 2, love both of them. There both classic'sSo at number 2 The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York After their second album Rum, Sodomy & The Lash, The Pogues wanted to release a Christmas single. Instead of a cover song, lead singer Shane MacGowan and banjo player Jem Finer decided to write one themselves. The first attempts to record this were as a duet with MacGowan and Pogues bass player Cait O'Riordan. They didn't have the so... MORE

Shane MacGowan tops list for Rock's Ugliest Men...

Artist:
Album:
Track:
Other Tags: U.G.L.Y., You Aint Got No Alibi, Riden hard, Put back wet
A site called West Virginia Surf Report has mad a list of the 10 ugliest men in Rock n' Roll (in no particular order). I don't know if I completely agree with all of their choices, but this picture of Shane MacGowan, definitely has my vote.
From the site:
Lemmy
Even if it wasn't for the solar system of terrifying warts, or whatever those things are, he'd still make the list. As it stands, this Motorhead legend is one of the Patron Saints of Ugly. An automatic, as they say. ... MORE

Movie Of The Year?

Free music video of Jesse James (3)
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford The grit of Sam Peckinpah meets the epic sweep of John Ford, with a smidgen of the character-led subtleties which made Robert Altman's McCabe And Mrs Miller a modern western classic. Beautifully shot by the Coen Brothers' regular cinematographer Roger Deakins, the movie also benefits from retaining lengthy passages from Ron Hansen's original book in the narration. Brad Pitt, as Jesse, has never been better, a... MORE

Radio 1: "Faggot" Too Offensive, "Scumbag" Perfectly Okay to Broadcast

Artist:
Track: Fairytale Of New York - (with Kirsty MacColl)

Great Moments in British Broadcast History, #35912

This is almost as brill as requiring Ray Davies to make a trans-Atlantic roundtrip to re-record one line in Lola:

Radio 1 censors Pogues' Christmas hit

(Reuters)
BBC Radio 1 has cut out the word "faggot" from an old Christmas hit in a move the mother of the song's late performer branded "ridiculous".
In "Fairytale of New York", released 20 years ago by Irish band the Pogues and singer Kirsty MacColl, she sings "You scumbag, you
