Working the REM concert a few weeks ago I was more interested in opening act the National than either REM (love em) or the Mouse (not so good live if you have not experienced). I've been a fan since Mr. November crossed my Ipod last year. Since I have siphoned in everything I can find and have read amazing things about the band live. January is just such a cruel, cruel month. Maybe not for you guys who were at the mog meeting, but for me it certainly was. Like Joxley already said in one of his posts, exam periods shouldn't be just after Christmas. First of all, it wrecks the days off you have, secondly, it gives your new year a complete false start. On the recommendation of a friend I've obtained two albums by The National: The Alligator and Boxer. I have yet to make it past the first song of Boxer, Fake Empire. No, it's not bad. In fact, I kind of like it..so much so that since I sat down here 20 minutes ago, it's played three times. I don't know what it is I like about it. Hey. been awhile. No, I'm not sure if Matt Berninger of Brooklyn's The National, does in fact smoke but I wouldn't be surprised. His grizzly, tired voice is as heartbreaking as it is compelling, almost like the one reciting WWII stories to it's grandchildren. Could be cigarettes that dragged life from his throat, or could be some sort of cultivated (and perhaps, pretentious) "artistic weight." Either way, his voice really is wonderful. Here we go with another wussy ass wistful pop song with piano...but damn is this song good..and the rest of the album is consistenly good...If you like this song then BUY IT! Think Leonard Cohen meets arcade fire meets clap your hands...cool listening!

Ok, I usually hear a good deal about a band before the hype starts. I usually know what I'm dealing with. Not this time. The National completely surprised me and blew me away. Apparently their last album was pretty great too, so I'll have to dig that up sometime. As for now, just check out the opening track to The National's newest release, Boxer.
