A National Experience

Artist:

Working the REM concert a few weeks ago I was more interested in opening act the National than either REM (love em) or the Mouse (not so good live if you have not experienced). I've been a fan since Mr. November crossed my Ipod last year. Since I have siphoned in everything I can find and have read amazing things about the band live. I was lucky enough to catch half the short set and was especially blown away by the live version of Fake Empire, which is duly represented on... MORE

Free music video of Fake Empire (7)
January is just such a cruel, cruel month. Maybe not for you guys who were at the mog meeting, but for me it certainly was. Like Joxley already said in one of his posts, exam periods shouldn't be just after Christmas. First of all, it wrecks the days off you have, secondly, it gives your new year a complete false start. So for the past month I have had my nose in the books, at one point even at a pace of a novel a day, and I even had to work whole nights a time or two ... MORE

We're Half-Awake

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(85)
On the recommendation of a friend I've obtained two albums by The National: The Alligator and Boxer. I have yet to make it past the first song of Boxer, Fake Empire. No, it's not bad. In fact, I kind of like it..so much so that since I sat down here 20 minutes ago, it's played three times. I don't know what it is I like about it. Because I'm now in the habit of making others suffer through my current musical addiction, I'll throw the song up here for all to enjoy. ... MORE

The National @ 9:30 Club

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(30)
Blog post image preview Photo:Kyle Gustafson. There was a telling moment during The National’s concert at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. last night. Four songs into the show, lead singer Matt Berninger requested that the stage spotlights be turned down, asserting, “We look a little better with less lights.” While this might have simply been the request of a modest frontman (as Berninger is well-reputed to be), it also embodied The National’s approach to performing, not to mention their sou... The National: Maybe years of smoking does good for the voice!?

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(22)
Blog post image preview Hey. been awhile. No, I'm not sure if Matt Berninger of Brooklyn's The National, does in fact smoke but I wouldn't be surprised. His grizzly, tired voice is as heartbreaking as it is compelling, almost like the one reciting WWII stories to it's grandchildren. Could be cigarettes that dragged life from his throat, or could be some sort of cultivated (and perhaps, pretentious) "artistic weight." Either way, his voice really is wonderful. It is Jeff Buckley-like swoon in an... MORE

I went a little nuts on this one, nine stars, up today at PopMatters http://www.popmatters.com/pm/music/reviews/33095/the-national-boxer/ The NationalBoxer(Beggars Banquet)US release date: 22 May 2007UK release date: 21 May 2007by Jennifer Kelly Holy Shit... They Beat Alligator! I am trying to stay cool here, but it’s difficult. Boxer has just shouldered its brawny way to the top of my so-far-in-2007 list. Brooding, dark, hopelessly romantic, superlatively rock whe... MORE

Blog post image preview Ok, I usually hear a good deal about a band before the hype starts. I usually know what I'm dealing with. Not this time. The National completely surprised me and blew me away. Apparently their last album was pretty great too, so I'll have to dig that up sometime. As for now, just check out the opening track to The National's newest release, Boxer.
