A National Experience

Artist:
Album:
Track:
Working the REM concert a few weeks ago I was more interested in opening act the National than either REM (love em) or the Mouse (not so good live if you have not experienced). I've been a fan since Mr. November crossed my Ipod last year. Since I have siphoned in everything I can find and have read amazing things about the band live. I was lucky enough to catch half the short set and was especially blown away by the live version of Fake Empire, which is duly represented on... MORE

You've Done It Again, The National

(3)
Blog post image preview The National has released a combo DVD/EP called A Skin, A Night/The Virginia EP which thusfar I am very impressed with (not a surprise considering the source of the music). I haven't watched the DVD yet, but plan to soon. Anyway, posted with this is the first song on the EP called "You've Done It Again, Virginia," and if you listen real closely (actually it's not that hard) to some of the accompanying music to Matt Berninger's baritone, you might hear Sufjan Stevens con... Discovery

I love it when a piece of music I own, new or not, gives me something drastically different than what I was expecting from it. Most recently this happened to me last week when I finally gave Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers By indie kids The National. I guess I was expecting the typical jangly watered down Life’s Rich Pageant era REM sonically altered emowhine we get so much of these days. Umm, yeah I got schooled. What I got was a band with a wide bottomed sound, occasiona... MORE

New DVD + EP From The National

Artist:
Album:
Track:
Blog post image preview One of my personal favorite American bands of the 2000s is The National. Both of their last two albums (Alligator and Boxer) ended up as the #2 albums in the BAGeL Radio end-of-year charts in their respective years(2007, 2005), so it is most exciting to hear that any new National music will be forthcoming. In this case it is an EP of previously unreleased stuff plus a DVD filmed mostly during the recording of Boxer. Hat tip to The Tripwire for the heads up. Check out t... MORE

If I told my 16 year old self that one day I would like something that sounds like The National, I would have kicked my own ass. But I've had their stuff playing on a loop on my Ipod - to work, from work, in the car, etc. etc.

20: The National - Boxer

Much like a beloved comedy in the movie industry, Boxer, has more quotes and one-liners to offer than Superbad. As if it was written by Voltaire, the level of intellect presented by frontman Matt Berninger is in a league all it's own. Few may criticize the monotony of his vocal stylings, and rightfully so. But for the most part, this album has received incredible reviews, including the prestigious honor of "Album of the Year" on Paste Magazine's '... MORE

Free music video of Mistaken For Strangers (1)
So I just have to share with everyone that I am madly, hopelessly head-over-heels in love with both the National and the Black Angels! These bands have been on constant rotation in my iTunes and my iPod for the past few days. I haven't fallen this hard forany band in years, and now here I am with two, count 'em, TWO awesome bands. Life is looking up. Here (if I do this correctly) is the Black Angels with "Sniper At the Gates of Heaven": And here is the National w... MORE

Petition To Ban January

Free music video of Fake Empire (7)
January is just such a cruel, cruel month. Maybe not for you guys who were at the mog meeting, but for me it certainly was. Like Joxley already said in one of his posts, exam periods shouldn't be just after Christmas. First of all, it wrecks the days off you have, secondly, it gives your new year a complete false start. So for the past month I have had my nose in the books, at one point even at a pace of a novel a day, and I even had to work whole nights a time or two ... MORE
