News was just released today that the legendary and pioneering noise-rock band The Monks lost their original electrified banjo player this week. Dave Day, real name Dave Havlicek, suffered a heart attack and massive brain injury earlier this week and was on life support immediately after. 60s band The Monks consisted of 5 American GIs stationed in Germany, trying to give the locals a taste of the contemporary sounds. Some say The Monks were early punk rock, others said they were the anti-Beatles (actually, it was probably The Monks that said that). How punk rock is this clip. Nothing is more punk rock than a banjo!

The Monks kicked off their world tour in my home town of Bemidji, MN last week. I wanted so badly to be there, but alas, I was stuck in LA working. Aah well. They left straight for Europe to play dates in Germany and... I don't really know where else, honestly. Why Bemidji? That's where Gary Burger (Monks lead singer and front man) lives.
