While they fight for artistic integrity and fall more and more into 1990's obscurity, the Smashing Pumpkins have announced that they will be heading out on a intimate August run and a not so intimate 20th Anniversary tour in November. The tours will sort of serve as a warm-up to that Gish tour everyone has been hoping for, which has now been pushed back to early 2009.

We used to call them the Mashing Mumpkins. I don't know why, I guess we thought it was funny. I used to collect their vinyl... before wife and kids and those kinda things came into my life... aka back when I had money. This song rocks about as hard as any of their later stuff, along with Tales Of A Scorched Earth and Bodies. I have not heard anything off of the new release... but this song still kicks my hind end. I was enjoying a quiet evening here, geeking out the MP3 collection. (This entails using Media Monkey to ensure that every REM song has REM as the band name, not R.E.M. or some variant thereof. I know, I'm a dork. Anyway ...) I was flipping through Smashing Pumpkins, and hit upon this track, and thought, "Man, this song was AWESOME when it came out." Thing is, it still holds up. Zeitgeist got mixed reviews, some of which are founded not on the music, but on the re-conceptualization of the Pumpkins' direction (See Stephen Entwistle's review on www.allmusic.com). To me the weakness is not with the conceptualization - if Billy Corgan wants to lament about this failing country instead of his tortured soul, more power to him, regardless of past endeavors - the weakness of the original cd lied in the lack of eclecticism and acoustic melodies. Billy Corgan wants more cha-ching. Seems Zeitgeist didn’t bring in the usual big dough for the band. Now Smashing Pumpkins are suing Virgin Records, their home during the release of Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Adore, and Machina/The Machines of God saying the label used the band’s name in promotional deals that hurt the band's credibility with fans. I really don't have a lot to say here, other than I'm amazed that nobody has ever posted this song. Smashing Pumpkins' best song, by far, if for nothing else, than for the, as Jack Black would put it, the 'face-melting' solo beginning at 3:09.
