I've never received a phone call where I'd been told that something awful has happened, some inconceivable loss. I don't typically ruminate on death, car accidents, losing my teeth, hair, or sexual identity. But sometimes I read a book or hear a song, and suddenly I am that person I thought I wasn't. They call it ice fog, the ghosted weight unsettling our livestock. It's midnight, but grey - white moonlight white stars on tin roof & dead grass, on muddy rapids. I felt like listening to something mellow, but also had a pulse running through it to keep my attention. Maybe it's the cold weather sinking into my skin, although out here in the west coast cold is nothing like it is elsewhere. I am reminded time and again that I need to sometimes stop and listen. So, after a few days of brilliant weather, we're back to the in-between. Cold, rainy, snow, but no real commitment to either one. This kind of weather sparked me to put on Ryan Adams' Love is Hell for the drive this morning. I found myself enjoying that record more than I was expecting to. So, it’s three in the afternoon on Sunday and I’ve been awake for about two hours. Last night was my bachelor party and I didn’t get home until about 4:30am after starting at 2pm yesterday.
